Sigerson Final 2018

(Oldest Posts First)

A tremendous advertisement for football on Saturday as the true fans of the GAA were served up an enthralling contest which ultimately was slightly ruined by a poor refereeing display.

NUIG will be sick they left it behind and the turning point came when Comer could have converted a goal before 2 minutes later, the centre forward from Monaghan gave O'Malley no chance between the sticks. NUIG would have been near home and hosed had that gone in. Comer was unbelievable in the first half but looked fatigued/out of gas in the 2nd. Con O'Callaghan gave a flat display that justified the media labeling him as over-rated.

NUIG had an embarrassment of riches coming off the bench and in all my days following the GAA - i havent seen a subs bench as stacked in my life. Molloy, Forde, Finnerty and Daly all being introduced.

Alas it wasn't to be as McQuillan did his damdest to win it for UCD. Fair play to the lads who went and togged the following day for the FBD final also.

Con massively over hyped alright, he really needs to start winning medals to justify his profile. :D

O'Callaghan was quiet enough but he's clearly not over hyped.

NUIG would have won if Comer hadn't been flogged the last few weeks, UCD couldn't contain him but in fairness there's not to many defenders who'd fancy their chances of stopping him.

The Monaghan man deserved his man of the match award although his goal was dreadful defending from NUIG.

Con is still a brilliant talent and will always be.

Sigerson is incredibly intensive and competitive. I have never seen anything to compare. Much faster than Inter County, The Colleges pick the best from several counties.

It is common that good players find themselves at a more level standing v teammates and opponents at Sigerson.

Also It is noticeable that Dublin lads are not at the same advantage as when using Croke Park as a home ground and other advantages which anyone would take if they could.

NUI fatigued in the last 10mins, Molloy was brough on too early should have came on with 10mins to go..Forde missed a bad chance and Molloys one of the post were bad misses near the end.
UCD were the better team in the last 10, and I thought the ref was helping NUI in the last 10, there was 2 or 3 calls that went NUI's way which looked like fouls on the UCD players, there number 3 looked like he was fouled for a penalty.
Good game of football

Congrats UCD entertaining game, luck went against NUIG on the day. Even the ref blocked a NUIG clearing pass and hopped the ball where UCD got the point, unlucky. Damien Comer put in a great shift and just had an unbelievable few weeks with too many matches. Condolences to his family on their recent loss also. NUIG had a massive campaign and well done to them too, they can be proud.

Sigerson semi on Wednesday, final on Saturday? Club players getting Garda escorts from Tullamore to Santry? Inter-county league games the following day and the previous Sunday? GAA needs to get real with the schedule.

Didn't realise Michael Daly was with NUIG this year too. His injury was a big loss to them as he would have been their 2nd best forward after Comer.

Turning point was definitely Comer hitting the post when NUIG were 4 points up. Ball was cleared down the field and UCD scored a goal instead. Practically a 6 point swing. NUIG went from almost going 7 points clear to instead only 1 point up.

Comer defnitely tired the last 15 minutes. He barely touched the ball towards the end of the game. The crazy run of games he was on finally took it out of him. UCD finished the game a bit better to be fair and had a lot of ball the last 5 or 6 minutes.

Most of the talk in the last week seemed to revolve around O'Callaghan and Comer, but McCarthy was excellent throughout. He scored 1-12 between the semi and final and was named MOTM in both I believe. Hopefully he carries that form back into the Monaghan jersey which will set up a big year for him.

That's defo all true, however county managers need to take a little bit of responsibility here as well in terms of player welfare.

If you were a county manager and had players playing in the Sigerson/Fitzgibbon was it really neccesary to flog them and having them playing in the opening league games as well?

Particularly at the weekend where you had lads playing a high intensity Final on Saturday and then expected to lone out again on the Sunday.

Very good game
Comer brillant first out of it in the second. Thought McQuillan poor. McCarthy all through good.

No mention how well McDonnell did on Con, only his 2nd game since op last Aug and then out again Sunday for Sligo. Gallagher looked better than some Mayo forwards too.
Looking at it I though a lot of the Galway county lads died in 2nd half (Cooke and Comer particularly)

Casey very good in the last 20 also.

Why oh why was it not on terrestial tv though

There's very little time for the Sigerson to be played at another time of year.

The league should start in the last weekend in Feb, the reality is that players won't be going back to their clubs in April so they'd just be better off starting the league later and paying more attention to player welfare.

DId Adam Gallagher of Mayo impress? He finished with 1-3 I think? Hoping he gets a run in our underperforming county team for the next few league games

He took his frees and goal well. He looks the part physically but just think his lack of pace is going to hold him back, he's certainly not going to become a Mayo regular this year and don't think he's good enough to make a difference, he's probably a better bet as a replacement for Doherty in an AI final then Drake is though to be fair.

I know someone from his club (Scotstown) well and he's been telling me for a good few years now about this talent who's coming through. First time I saw him in the flesh was in an AI minor semi final vs mayo and even though monaghan lost he was brilliant.

Hopefully he's managed well and we get to see a lot of him , probably lucky he's slightly under the radar with Clifford and Con about , he also will learn a lot playing with the fantastic McManus who I could watch all day

To give the other lads a chance, how about making county players ineligible for colleges competitions. I'll get my coat ...
