It was a bit poor by Gough but more so O'Shea and Mayo in general towards the end. I would usually rate Gough as one of the better officials but I think they were well hoodwinked. Mayo did what they needed to do to get the points. It was not pretty but that is the way it goes. seanfinn (Monaghan) - Posts: 360 - 29/01/2018 13:34:20 2071938 Link 0 |
Sorry but the Barry Kerr decision was 100 per cent correct, debate the other one if you want.

No issue with the Barry Kerr card. It was a pity though because the lad had serious game up until then. On the other hand, Ryan Wylie clearly did not strike O'Shea, and O'Shea himself played it up by rolling around as if badly injured. He sprung up and contested the throw-up once Wylie was gone. Disappointing but not unexpected. The last play looked pretty clear as a push in the back on Darren Freeman. It most likely would have been given in the early part of the game, or indeed if Monaghan had been a point down at that stage. Back to the old problem of refereeing the circumstance and not the play itself. A pretty sweet strike to the face on O'Connell while in possession was also missed. To be fair, there was a first half wide for Mayo that probably should have been given as a point. Good contest for late January all the same. Fair enough on Kerr - I agree. However the straight red for Wylie was a result of poor form from the Mayo men. The black for Freeman was just bad refereeing. seanfinn (Monaghan) - Posts: 360 - 29/01/2018 15:46:04 2072021 Link 0 |
Yes not a straight red but he was a bit silly at the same time. He was a bit OTT a few times during the game, bit of a character it would seem!

The worrying thing was the umpires thought they saw a strike. It's obviously a clear case of seeing O'Shea holding his face and trying to join the dots. shaggylegend (Monaghan) - Posts: 1928 - 29/01/2018 16:37:21 2072053 Link 0 |
I was not at the game and I don't condone diving or play acting. That said talking to a friend who was at it...O Se took serious hits constantly off the ball and so stand digs and pulls....not surprised as this has become a feature in recent times. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11227 - 29/01/2018 19:26:05 2072140 Link 0 |
A few points on the O'Shea/Wylie incident.. MayoDan (Mayo) - Posts: 414 - 29/01/2018 21:01:59 2072182 Link 0 |
True Wylie was stupid and let his team mates down but O'Shea was a poor with his antics. Draw a fair result but ref not giving Mon that late free was the deciding factor. Thought Mayo supporters were a credit to their county & hopefully both counties stay up.

Video clip doing rounds on Twitter of the incident. In summary 1. Wylie ran and pushed Aidan O'Shea in the back (no need to do it but happens in every match played after winning a free) 2. There was no strike 3. Aidan O'Shea, given the incredible power and size differential that Mr Wylie (the Ryan version) has over him, was thrown upwards in the air in a motion that would normally be considered impossible under the law of physics and resulted in him rolling around on the ground when he eventually came back to earth...in short he made the most of it to get the Monaghan player sent off Would be shocked if this card is not overturned on appeal. Ryan clearly doesn't like Mayo people. From memory that is his second red against them in a couple of years (1st one was deserved btw) mightymon (Monaghan) - Posts: 11 - 31/01/2018 06:59:22 2072663 Link 0 |
