I'd imagine that was a typo. TSG reported the attendance as 4 and a half thousand. 14,000 in Carrick would have that ground bursting at the seams and it wasn't half full judging by the footage I saw of the highlights.

Yep they stuck 10k on to that. Here are the attendances for the weekend. Football Armagh Clare - 5,429 Tyrone Cavan 6,000 approx Leitrim Monaghan - 4,606 Kildare Mayo - 8,200 (approx) Hurling Cork Clare 45,364 Kilkenny Galway / Carlow Westmeath 40,703 dahayeser (Cork) - Posts: 337 - 02/07/2018 10:50:08 2117567 Link 0 |
Cheers for the correction. Saw the correct figure on the Indo just there. Thought it way too high when I initially saw it even if the Leitrim win over Louth generated some additional local interest.

Why wasn't this played in Portlaoise?

What does Portlaoise hold now with health and safety restrictions? 20k? Probably only 4/5k? Thurles 24,000 seats making it a much superior option, especially for kids. I'd imagine they were expecting a bigger crowd for the game than they got too. I though there would have been over 30k at it. Was surprised to see one terrace closed. One attendance to throw in to the mix - Kildare Fermanagh 7,400 dahayeser (Cork) - Posts: 337 - 10/07/2018 10:37:50 2120293 Link 0 |
7400? Thats actually quite poor. They say about 10,000 in Portlaoise and at least half there were from Roscommon. About 12 from Cork and maybe 1500 from Tyrone.

Will the GAA lose out much with Mayo out of the championship or has the super 8s come in at the right time money wise for them, most counties involved will have large attendances at the super 8 matches anyway riverboys (Mayo) - Posts: 1389 - 11/07/2018 14:04:06 2120718 Link 0 |
7,400 is a good enough attendance for Kildare v Fermanagh when you take into account that there a crowd of over 10k for the double header in Portlaoise. 8,800 at Monaghan v Laois. gaelicgab (USA) - Posts: 878 - 11/07/2018 14:32:38 2120731 Link 0 |

Poor attendances in Croke Park at the weekend considering they were double headers yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11230 - 16/07/2018 16:44:02 2122809 Link 2 |
You are expecting Mayo standards of attendance from the rest of the country ;) I don't think these attendances were that bad. People turn up when they think they have a real chance of winning something. I'd say Kerry and Dublin really believed they could win Sam before the weekend. It is a complete contrast to the Munster hurling championship where everyone believed they were as good as everyone else. Things have gotten very predictable of late in football. Galway supporters are looking at hurling as their real chance of silverware, Yeah they pushed Dublin hard in the league final but that Connaught final performance was probably reality check. Galway City is a soccer city and the game clashing with the WC final wasn't ideal Tyrone after last years hammering by the Dubs, a tame exit from Ulster and going life and death with Meath, a team that fell to Longford in Leinster, plus players leaving the panel, Cavanagh's criticism and a general feeling that the setup under Micky Harte has gone stale weren't expecting too much. Expectations have risen after the weekend though. Kildare, despite a couple of good wins and the galvenising effect of "Newbridge or nowhere" know that if you lose to an albeit improving Carlow you are not in the shake up for honours. Monaghan again lose to a poor enough Fermanagh side is a bit of a reality check especially when they see what Donegal did to them. They don't believe they are contenders. If they had to play Dublin it would be a keep the score down job. Donegal - genuine optimism here, playing great football but Dublin are so far ahead. I think Donegal were up for a right crack of them (which to be fair I though they did - in a game I enjoyed) but losing their best out and out forward before a joust with the best would have dampened fans expectations. Kerry, real buzz about the county as evident from the record breaking crowd that attended their first round dame against Clare but they don't travel to Croke Park in huge numbers even when it is straight knockout. With 2 more games they will perceive as very winnable coming up to qualify and the WC final on the box there wasn't going to be a huge green and gold following. Roscommon, talked up in the media before hand but they probably had a feeling they were off the pace though not quiet as much as it transpired. Dublin - brought a great crowd as ever, maybe 30k but I think they are getting bored of winning and how easy it has become for them. They need to be challenged and beaten to ignite their fans again. From a neutral point of view the super-8's is crying out for Tyrone to ambush the Dubs in Omagh. Wouldn't it be some story if the old master Mickey Harte who we all though may have run out of ideas a few years back had one last sting in him. Hopefully in a good game too. Looking back on history, many a larger and better equipped army from the Pale got ambushed and sent back in disarray on attempting to enter the O'Neill county! dahayeser (Cork) - Posts: 337 - 17/07/2018 11:59:28 2123079 Link 0 |

Very good synopsis. I referenced in another thread that there was 21k at the Kerry/Limerick Mayo/Cork q/f double header in 2011. Probably mostly Mayo fans but the point is all teams struggle to get the marginals (some more than others) to turn out. I mean in 2002 Armagh/Sligo and Kerry/Galway q/f double header had 59k. It was 53k for Donegal/Galway and Kerry/Ros in a 2003 double header q/f. Basically my point is the system has become wearying and more people are making choices of what they want to see plus football as a spectacle is not as attractive as the 1998-2002 era and the great Tyrone Kerry finals of 2005 & 2008 (although the Dublin Mayo finals were very good to watch). The upcoming hurling semi finals will have big crowds. I would expect Cork/Lim to hit 70k and Clare/Galway to hit 50k (would be more if it was on a Sunday). Part of the reason is the spectacle is attractive. kiloughter (Galway) - Posts: 1946 - 17/07/2018 13:14:42 2123110 Link 0 |

Incredible attendance in Clones considering about 1,000 Kerry folk showed up. Approximately 1 in three of the entire population of the county were there!!!!

To be fair, there's not much else to do in Monaghan on a Sunday evening.
