For anybody that turns 18 this year, at what level are the supposed to play? From an intecounty level the are too old to play minor but are too young to play either u20/21 (football/hurling) so can't compete anywhere. From a club perspective, for the counties that have changed to u17 for minor grade , they have the same problem (except for those very few good enough to play senior level). This is going to be the same problem for 18 year olds every year going forward. Is the idea here to drive our youth away from the GAA or just a complete lack of planning of the new legislation put in place? onlyhurling (Galway) - Posts: 800 - 05/01/2018 14:01:58 2066948 Link 2 |
Believe you and me Derry know this more than anyone. We had a cub from my own club named at full forward to play in the first round of McKenna Cup on Wednesday night past, only to be be told prior to throw in that he was too young to play and then subsequently told, as you point out he can not play under 17 as he is too old, nor can he play under 20/21 as he is too young. A shocking oversight at Congress and by all those in authority at HQ. Did anyone really think this through? kingpuck71 (Derry) - Posts: 689 - 05/01/2018 14:37:35 2066954 Link 3 |
Aye and I wouldn't mind that Callum Brown looks like a very decent prospect for Derry. He's a big, strong athletic lad who looked very impressive anytime I've seen him playing. Doesn't he play a bit of soccer too? It wouldn't surprise me if he turned his attention to that full time now. The GAA is a great organisation but it never ceases to amaze me how often they shoot themselves in both feet.

I believe the rule states that the can't play u20's but if they can then I think this is worse, they are allowed to play intercounty football but not hurling which is u21.

The logical assumption is that a player who becomes 18 in the 2018 calendar year is overage for U17s, but eligible for U20s (even if not 18 at the time of competition.) The motion which was raised at the time stated that U17s catered for 15-17 year olds and U20s catered for 18-20 year olds. At any given point in time, a player has to fall into either one of those categories. Punjab (Fermanagh) - Posts: 28 - 05/01/2018 16:20:17 2066979 Link 1 |

An U18 player might be safer away from the Junior team of a senior club. neverright (Roscommon) - Posts: 1648 - 05/01/2018 17:09:07 2066985 Link 0 |

Dublin hurling are running an under 19 development squad , it will be sporadic because of exams , it will bring in the best of players born in 1999 and 2000 , majority of time where they will get together is summer months , idea behind it is not to lose lads where there has already been savage investment in since 13-14 years of age , I know Dublin are not alone in taking that approach, competitions may happen blitz type as all training no games will not be sufficientl to keep lads interested , as the first year this has happened I suppose it's a watch basis at the moment, I doubt to many county boards want to see lads walk so let's see Damothedub (Dublin) - Posts: 5193 - 05/01/2018 18:41:05 2066994 Link 0 |

What is an 18 year old supposed to do this year? ----- seperately, another thread is asking, supersub15 (Carlow) - Posts: 2904 - 05/01/2018 21:54:54 2067022 Link 0 |
Ah we keep it simple in Kerry - what does an eighteen year old do, simply play minor football. We hav kept the minor grades at both County and divisional league and championship level....... If it ain't broken ........ Horsebox77 (Kerry) - Posts: 5491 - 05/01/2018 22:56:09 2067029 Link 0 |

I thought UNDER 21 meant anyone YOUNGER than 21 could play on the team. I learn something new every day I suppose. Trump2020 (Galway) - Posts: 2100 - 06/01/2018 15:50:56 2067092 Link 0 |

I was reading an article the other day in relation to Callum Brown of Derry and in the article it said he can't play under 20 due to the rules as they are at the minute. I'm not sure how he can't but hear a lie tell a lie.
