Hopefully they'll heed the warnings not to displace homeless people from their regular sleeping spots. Unfortunately this has not been the case with certain other high profile groups out to highlight the issue and collect donations.

Homelessness will always exist on some level but as societal inequality widens it'll increase in prevalence and it will not always just be those with drink/drug issues that are homeless.

Increasingly that is the case and it becomes a chicken and egg scenario. Is someone on the streets because of addiction or have they developed an addiction to deal with being on the street?

If we continue to treat drug addiction the way we do in this country then we will continue to have a homelessness issue, if governments continue to do absolutely zero to combat the housing crisis then it will continue to be a problem. If we continue to under invest in mental health resources then we will continue to have these issues.

What we are doing at the moment and for the last number of years is not working, yet we will continue to do it year after year after year.

Politicians won't change what they are doing because they know ultimately that weather they do or don't their voters don't actually care about homeless people, drug addicts or those left on the margins of "civilised society".

I looked at the list of sportsmen/women from the GAA doing this and it really is impressive. What I find most heartening is the social conscience of young people, it has an energy, it is infectious and is great to see. The best part is they don't pre-judge, don't preach and have no expectation of making a difference - they are just trying to do the right thing.

Yeah, fair play to them. The housing crisis in Dublin is an artificial crisis brought about by the inability of the govt, for ideological reasons, to countenance anything other than a private sector house build programme, even though it clearly isn't working. I used to live in central London. I remember one Christmas night in Paddington getting into an argument with a group of rich guys in tuxedos who were laughing and urinating on people sleeping in doorways. Reality is that once you're poor and homeless, you'll die prematurely, and you'll generally be despised by most nice, respectable people. Lots of people sleeping in doorways is always a tell-tale sign of a rich, successful and unequal society.
