Hard to accept that Tyrone beat Kerry in the championship in the last decade.

Pat in 'puke football' era was merely indulging in some public self-therapy - as a proud Kerryman, it must have been hard to take, being beaten by a bunch of Nordie upstarts : ) In reality, Tyrone's football of the last decade was good stuff to watch and Pat's public outbursts had about as much analytical rigour as O'Rourke's nasty claim that Dooher (a man whose performance against Donegal in one Ulster5 c'ship game has to rank as one of the finest individual performances I've seen in over 40 tears) was a 'very bad' footballer. However, Pat's past bigotry shouldn't be used to damn him forever - he probably has a point about the current Tyrone approach. For instance, when a rebuilt Tyrone made it onto the national stage in 2015, they were perhaps slightly-unlucky to lose v Kerry and in any event played a decent-enough game. In 2016, you might have expected them to build on that. However, they were much worse in 2016 - inexcusable conservatism v Mayo in last 10 mins when the game was there for the taking. And, obviously, in 2017, they were even worse - a bewildering collapse of resolve and ambition that easily was the worst Tyrone performance in Croker that I've seen in my lifetime. So, mini-breakthrough in 2015 and then downhill all the way since. I think the county is playing below itself and that Pat has a valid point. You have surely to ask some questions of an approach that has the county's division 1 top scorer at club level consistently on the bench and we now see that yet more defenders are being brought into the squad. essmac (Tyrone) - Posts: 1141 - 26/11/2017 15:51:27 2063595 Link 0 |
Whilst I agree with the first part of your post I somewhat disagree with the second part however I don't want to get into Tyrone's tactics, it's been done. I'm not sure why Spillane, C O'R and Brolly's default setting for negativity is MH and Tyrone. Nearly every county and club team play essentially the same way with men back and hit on the counter. Look at the Castlebar game today, men behind the ball. Why didn't he say "the GAA as a whole?" I suppose he has to sell that rag of a paper and knows he will get a reaction. I know people we say it's typical Tyrone paranoid. But it does seem to be their default setting. The_Fridge (Tyrone) - Posts: 2087 - 26/11/2017 16:44:29 2063609 Link 0 |
Jays would pat just let it go, I'm getting sick of him self and brolly talking sh*te all the time and trying to out do eachother. KingdomBoy1 (Kerry) - Posts: 14092 - 26/11/2017 20:20:48 2063656 Link 0 |
Pat has what's called 's**t on a blanket syndrome' regarding Tyrone. It doesn't matter what he does or say he just CANNOT shake it off. It clings to him and every Kerry Gael like s**t on a blanket. They will go to their graves lamenting it. Outplayed, outfought, outclassed and second best 3 times to the Team of the Decade. For their own sake they should just let it go. To be fair to Pat theres an element of truth to it , but its mind games on his behalf as he knows Vishred (Mayo) - Posts: 303 - 27/11/2017 02:54:48 2063707 Link 0 |
I think Pat and everyone on here really needs to let the whole Kerry/Tyrone thing go. Wally (Tyrone) - Posts: 912 - 27/11/2017 09:11:38 2063723 Link 0 |
Wally As I said this isn't a debate about Tyrone and their tactics etc, there's plenty off treads on the Tyrone page to talk about that. It's more why people automatically talk about negativity and Tyrone and not other teams. I could name 29 other counties who get men behind the ball and play on the counter. Nearly every club team are the same. Is Spillane still bitter? It's a long time to still hold a grudge. The_Fridge (Tyrone) - Posts: 2087 - 27/11/2017 09:52:05 2063729 Link 0 |
Ulsterman Yes Tyrone were a great team and Pat Spillane, and everybody else of a similiar ilk, should shut up about it. However Tyrone, though great were not the team of the decade. The fact is from 2009 to 2009 inclusive Kerry won five All Irelands, and retained the title once, and also contested eight Finals. Tyrone record in the decade does not compare with this. That is a fair point, no team sets up traditionally anymore and everyone plays almost an identical type of football now. The only thing that differentiates teams now is their skill level and how much they actually commit to the counter attack. Try telling this to some of our Southern brethren though and it is like banging your head against a brick wall. The funniest one I heard was last year before the Tyrone/Dublin semi final. Pat Spillane actually said that we were about to watch a tactical battle unlike the week before where we had two teams play a traditional 15v15 game! The game he was referring to was the Kerry/Mayo semi final. It was one of the most cynical games I every witnessed and Kerry played with a double sweeper for the entire match, yet Pat still maintained that this was traditional. The man is so biased that he can't be taken seriously anymore. Wally (Tyrone) - Posts: 912 - 27/11/2017 11:10:10 2063741 Link 0 |
Tyrone played great football in a great era 1998-2009. Kerry, Tyrone, Armagh, Galway, Meath, Cork, Dublin, Mayo etc were all good teams to watch. There is no doubt football has changed to a more defensive system but I don't think this can be just laid at the door of Tyrone. Looking at some of these teams the hardest thing to do is stay at the top level consistently and this is where Kerry must be applauded. Tyrone just don't look to have the same players as in the past but are performing at a good level without endangering the All-Ireland at present. I though it was great the way Donegal under Jim McGuinness broke through by doing something different even if it did not please the like's of Pat. He will go his grave protesting about kerrys purity!! He really has to get over it. It's almost like Spillane, Brly and O'Rourke have to out do each other to stay relevant. As someone mentioned a change in the SG line up would be great.

No team plays traditionally anymore, that doesn't mean that every team plays the same. Whammo86 (Antrim) - Posts: 4172 - 27/11/2017 19:10:39 2063827 Link 0 |
