Replying To fredflint:  "Only made sense if he was injured. I thought introducing Johnson at HT was too early and playing him at Ctr forward cost us a goal. Mattie has done well with decisions on the line this year but I think he mad a few poor calls Sunday."
Johnston has the unselfish ability to look for space , lay the ball off , take the return.
If only other forwards were on the same page as he was.
There's a good 30 minutes football in him. He can read the game 2 passes ahead. When he and Mackey retire i don't know where the leadership will come from.
Also McKiernan not up to the work rate standard that's required. Needs a few games on the bench.
Brady not a centre back either. Move Faulkner there as he can read the game and put Clarke back full back.
Put Farrelly back in goals cannot see for the life of me what positives Galligan brings.
Bit of work to be done but we are improving though very loose at times

Galligan has been excellent throughout the league.
Saved us v down and very nearly did v roscommon in Hyde park too.
Best kickout in the country behind comerford from tipp.
Only player on the panel who can kick a long range free.

Division 2 probably looks tougher next year, so Cavan avoided that. Declan Bonner and Donegal will be under some pressure after relegation. They played some good stuff in Div 1 despite relegation. They haven't been beaten in championship in Ballybofey in a good while.

Interesting that they are keeping Jaaon McGee with the u20s this year. He made a big impact with the Seniors last year at midfield .

I don't know what planet you are on but your above post has me baffled to be honest with you but one part in particular your opinion of Galligan he has to be one of the top three in the country and you question what positives he has to offer. Jesus lad come out from under the blanket he is the main reason why Cavan are back in division 1 again. I will not comment on the rest of your post for the truth might well offend a few.

Good post Sean , Galligan best keeper in County by far and anyone saying he isn't is cannot be taken seriously.

Would have to agree with "in and around the house" To be honest Sean. Thought his kick outs in the first half were a bit dodgy and indeed in the game against Tipperary in Breifne I thought he should have went for the ball leading to the first goal. More importantly when the game was in the melting pot last Sunday and you needed him to nail those first two 45's. He missed both. We had just scored a wonder goal, Roscommon were clearly rattled and that was the time to push on and go win the game. Instead we miss both, allow Roscommon to regain their composure and they go down the field and score a goal. Game over.

His 45s are brutal playing with the wind. Could excuse 1 miss but not 2. Vital ones at that. Can Martin Reilly not kick a 45?
His positioning under a high ball was suspect too. We need a centre back too.. Faulkner flanked by Martin Reilly and C Brady.
Clarke full back flanked by Murray and mc Laughlin. Plenty of forwards available to rotate

At no stage did Roscommon look rattled they were a very composed team going forward and we had no answer for them it's that simple they showed fantastic character I hope Cavan take some of it on board. There is loads of work to be done to get a team to play Donegal in seven weeks. "I am going to ask this question where the hell is the spine"
Lot's of if's and buts had Murray put the ball in the net if Galling had of nailed the 45s if Johnston had not laid of that pass to McVeety there would have been no goal the two chances in the last 5 minuets to put the ball over the bar from short frees. Look the most composed team on the day won it's that simple. Galligan is one of the top three goal keepers in the country and you are in division 1 next year because of him don't forget it. I say thankfully for division 2 will be a tough division in 2019.

Exactly. Take the 45s off him for sure but to suggest he is not our No 1 keeper is idiotic. He single handedly got us 2 points against Down and another key save against Tipp. His kickouts are much better than his understudy. I'd be more concerned as to why one of our midfielders is not looking to get free for his kickouts.

A kickout strategy is something worked on in training. If there doesn't appear to be one this goes back to management.

It's better than last year. We had none last year and it killed us!

I'd be surprised if Donegal go man to man and push up on our knockouts so we need to use our free man to secure possession from kickouts.

Neither Midfielders make themselves targets for kickouts. Martin Reilly has been the target of kickouts more than any other player as far as I have seen.

He has done alright at winning his share of what was kicked to him but that he is the main target is lunasy..

I'd be suprised if they dont. If they spent 5 mins watching what happens us at midfield when an aggressive press is made they would see that is how they could win the game.

Hard luck to all at weekend. I'm sure they'll be disappointed by some of their performances but championship is around the corner to put things right. Roscommon deserved the win but in saying that we definitely had the chances to push them right to the end and even win it. The attempts at scores in the last 10 minutes when well in the game from relatively easy positions and the missed central 45s wind assisted were deflating. These things simply cannot happen if players want to be taken seriously at this level. No point sending a team out open and attack orientated if they cannot take simple chances.
Lots to be positive over too. We looked very dangerous at times and if we can get a bit more consistency and composure out of the undoubted potential that's there then we can be a force. Talking is easy though and how we achieve that is another matter entirely. Unfortunately the biggest positive for me is also the biggest negative. McVeety was simply a class above and if he's not back soon will be a huge huge loss. Showed real leadership and always willing to take the game to the opponent. He's missed further out the field but going forward I'd love to see him stay up front. Maybe if Gerry Smith becomes available again then he could fill in his old role. Moving on some of the younger lads showed glimpses of what they are about so again you'd hope there's more to come. Also while we made lots of mistakes and probably should have defended a couple of the goals much better I though we never gave up so credit where's it's due.
Regarding Championship, yes we need work in a lot of areas. CHB and midfield are still problem areas but we kinda have known this for a long time now. No point tearing up the blue print at this stage and going back to the drawing board. We're going to have to ride it out a bit and hope that with playing time and more experience we improve in these areas. The mantra for a long time has been that chopping and changing is not going to get us anywhere and the team need consistency in selection for these areas so for me we've set out our stall and will have to go with it more or less for championship. I don't see massive changes in the team because for one I don't think the personnel is there to improve these areas and for the most part we've being going with the best team available. I can't really see anyone come in over the next 6 weeks. Buchannon is too far off match fitness. Givney won't be back this year. Same goes for F. Flanagan, James McEnroe or Gerry Smith. Mossy Corr is retired. Yes there are forwards that could come in but overall I don't think the young lads there have performed too badly and deserve their places in the Championship 26. So we'll need to get behind what's there and hopefully they surprise a few. Donegal might be a bridge too far but we're more than capable of beating the majority of teams in the country and putting a good run together.

Mattie got us to a league final in his 2nd year in charge, he got us promotion, we are now playing a style of football that the players are enjoying and the crowd are enjoying. We just didn't play as well as we did during the league, some players had an off day, which can happen but the main thing here is that we have secured Division One football for next year, and we can actually look forward to meeting Donegal, because lets face it, they're hardly going to be full of confidence having been relegated by a very poor Mayo team. Mark my words, Donegal will be nervous about this game, and I think we can hurt them.

In regards to kick outs, they certainly need to be worked on and if I was a manager, I would show multiple videos of the Dublin kickouts. Cluxton merely kicks it into the space and the players run onto it, its a very simple strategy.

Roll on 6 weeks, we should be going into this game full of confidence, Donegal are there for the taking!

Going on what we have seen in the past few weeks culminating in last Sunday it is clear we have big problems with our midfield coupled with the amount of goal chances we are allowing our opponents leads me to believe we have next to no chance of getting victory in Donegal... when you also add in McVitty not been fully fit ( can't be ) it's hard to see how Cavan won't be in the 1st round draw for the back door games...unfortunately. ..!!

6 weeks before championship you really think it's a good idea to bring these guys in who have no county level training done?
