>> It's not really that simple though is it? Professional soccer is played during the week as much as it is at the weekends which won't work at amateur level because players have to work and go to college etc.

English Premiership soccer teams have to play a minimum of around 40 games in the season, hence the need to play during the week.

Simple solution - place a more realistic demand on GAA teams as its not professional i.e. around 15!"
100% I think intercounty teams need a tighter max and min number of games.

10 min, max 15 played over a period of 18 weeks. April to July.

Aug-October for club championship.

February and March for Provincial and All Ireland club. Intercounty preseason to take place alongside this without those still involved with club championship.

Club league played April to July without county players.

The season it so much more compact for everyone with the majority of games taking place during the best weather.

Not need for games in November to January at all. Let people rest up. The season is so long right now."
Are you suggesting the All Ireland final will be played in July??? That will never happen. Bringing it forward to August is a good move and frees up sept and Oct for the club championships and most counties will be able to start their club championships in August if they want to but it's up to each individual county boards to decide on when to start county championships. Iv'e been involved in club championships that didn't start until end of Sept/early Oct and this is what needs to be stopped. If you know at the beginning of the season that club championship starts the first weekend of Sept then you can make plans around this to gear training towards this and even to plan holidays etc. I think people are expecting too much."]Aug bank holiday. Only a couple more weeks earlier than next years"]I think that's far to early. You're condensing the star attraction of the GAA into a tiny season. Why would you do that? More games on at the same time means less games televised etc. Get as much publicity as possible for them."]Exactly, I think what they've suggested for next year is a massive improvement. The provincial championships take too long to play out so they're being condensed for 2018. There is no way you can have the flagship competition over by the August Bank holiday IMO

Short can be very sweet.

Look at the World Cup. Olympics. NBA season. Time isn't particularly important in building up interest in something.

I think the GAA misses a trick by having games too spread out and the season loses momentum.

We have few bad games a weekend and then everyone talking the competition down.

Loads of games, short period of time can be incredibly exciting.

I just think things would be better for the game if there was a better season provided for everyone.

I think more players would be prepared to commit to intercounty football if the season were more contained and impacted less on the club game.

NBA season goes from October to June. You think that's a short season?

Sorry typo. Meant NFL season.

I was also thinking NCAA March Madness for basketball. In the NBA their season is very much dominated by the playoffs which are played off very quickly.

Playoffs are three months, April to June.

March madness is the college game. Again like the sigerson it's all rushed through. I don't think the championship should be rushed off as soon as possible. It's insane from a publicity perspective if nothing else.

That's what I'm saying, I don't think it'd be bad from a publicity point of view. There's a lot to be said for saturation.

The NCAA is not like the Sigerson in any shape or form. It's big business, despite the players not being paid.

March Madness is played quickly for its effect.

NBA playoffs have lots of games coming thick and fast.

I don't get the link between duration of an event and it being a great promotional tool. The soccer World Cup is the biggest event in sport and it's played off over 5 weeks.

I'm talking about making some sort of 1 League and championship linked competition. You'd still be talking about 18 weeks of matches by adding April into the mix. Higher profile for league which is gets little exposure right now.

Only 50 games are shown a season. That can be maintained in an 18 week season, its less than 3 a weekend. Plus you'd be talking about having more games between the top teams. It's just a short season in timeframe to not impinge on club activity.
