All-Star Nominations

Replying To St.Conleth:  "Its based on player performance not team and who they beat. Feeley was the best midfielder in the Dublin, Laois and Meath games. Cant deny him his nomination. Likewise Flynn had some fantastic scores in games played including one of the best pints scored in Croke park, against the all Ireland champions."
Both Kildare players, Kevin Feeley and Daniel flynn deserved their nominations on the basis of their performances as St Conleth's said. They won't get All- Stars but I'm delighted that their performances during the championship were recognised.

Will this be the first year that a player of the year nominee doesn't win an all star?

Maybe in football.

In '94 Brian Whelahan was Hurler of the Year and didn't win an All Star! Heard Dave McIntyre saying that on Off The Ball last night. Apparently that year the All Star team was picked before the final.

Replying To TheUsername:  "Your first point is wrong mate, Kilkenny for me has been Dublins best player this year, unfortunately that looks to be rumbled now as, as you say he was marked out of it on Sunday, yet he was clever enough to take his man marker centre field and Connolly exploited the space second half. Keegan marked him well to be fair. Kilkenny was the best player in the country for me this year, i couldn't argue with he nominations though, but as i say i would have Boyle and Higgins in over Clarke.

Im not that surprised to be honest, he is a controversial character, not that he is practically dirty player, hes just a bit of a rouge, you would dislike him if your not from Dublin, the cheeky grin when he won the free on Sunday is a perfect example, but you would worship if from Dublin, he is an absolute maverick, to be honest i think you need characters in the game and he is certainly that, im sure his 5 celtic crosses help the balm the pain of missing out on a couple of all stars and he will probably be re remembered as the greatest player, on the greatest dublin team ever. i suppose like one or two others he doesn't fit the squeaky clean narrative the GAA likes to project on those days. Lee Keegan is a fine player surely - agreed."
Yes Kilkenny brought his marker to midfield....from where Lee Keegan his marker started his run to get on the end of a move to score a goal. Not so clever. If you want to nullify Keegan you keep him close to his own goal surely? Like Roscommon did in 2nd half of the drawn game this year. Kilkenny was completely negated by Keegan it's ok to admit it. Kilkenny is a fine player but far from Dublins best player this year

Without question mate, both are great players, Keegan scored a fine goal and brilliant play from Mayo and Keegan. Both are top quality players. Who got the upper hand in the final was not the point i was making. Keegan did a fine job man marking Kilkenny, Kilkenny did a fine job in his role making space for others to exploit. I dont think it has to be all or nothing both played their roles very well.

All opinions of course, i think you have to watch all Dublins game live to really understand how good Kilkenny is, he is the most intelligent footballer in the country and because of that he is the best in my opinion, hard to believe he is still only 24.

Well by that logic Powter and Kerrigan of Cork and Murphy and Broderick of Carlow should have been nailed on for a nomination! Not to mention Conor McManus, Eoin Cleary,Conor Sweeney..etc etc

Maybe these counties are not as loved amongst the media as others.

2014 by far the best player that year. Won club championship with Vincents putting on one of the greatest exhibitions seen in croke park against Castlerbar in the final. Excellent for Dublin even against Donegal along with Flynn were both excellent that day.

The problem with the POTY award is it really is Player of August and September award. Never takes into consideration the whole year.

Many prominent so called experts are on record as saying Connolly should have got POTY in 2014.

Who were the prominent so called experts that said Diarmuid Connolly should have got player of
the year in 2014 ?. James O' Donoghue was easily the outstanding player of the year in 2014.

Colm o rourke and Joe Brolly.

As I said the POTY award is really the player of August or September award.

O'Donaghue had a poor final didn't score and played more around midfield in that final.

It's all about opinions.

Connolly in my opinion had a much better year.

1. As good as he was in the club final, it's never considered. 2014 shouldn't have seen an exception made for him.

2. Wasn't he part of the Dublin forward line that let the Donegal backs saunter up the field to get the scores that beat Dublin that day?

Good interview in the Indo with the excellent Turlough O'Brien. He raises the very valid point about the extreme elitism of the All Star nominations. He rightly points out what a massive boost Carlow football would have got from even one nomination which they would have fully deserved-especially after five games (two against div one teams)

The fact that Kildare who played fewer games than Carlow got TWO nominations while Carlow didn't merit one is a sad reflection on the selection process which unsurprisingly is media related.

Jasus you don't like Kildare, do you? First half the Galway team should have gotten nominated ahead of our lads, now Carlow should too! By your logic if we got beaten by a Dublin team in "in first gear" then nobody from Tyrone or Monaghan should get nominated at all. We got closer than they did, playing a much better style of football. Feely was nailed on for a nomination, he's one of the best midfielders in the country. Flynn I will accept might be a bit luckier but had a very decent year too. All your whinging about Kildare is irrelevant anyway as neither man will get an award so after awards night you can stop sucking those lemons!

Carlow lost to Dublin by 12 points and beat 3 div 4 sides that in fairness they should be beating and lost to a Monaghan team who were terrible on the evening. Yes Sean Murphy and Paul broderick played well but certainly no better than the players who were nominated. Turlough o Brien is getting caught up in this relative success. Paddy mcbrearty regularly competes and excels in div 1 football and in a highly competitive ulster championship and he complains he got a nomination over Broderick who plays in div 4 and though played well was not outstanding.

The fact is an all star is hard earned and reflects the success of teams generally but it's fair, Gary Brennan got nominated last year and Declan Browne got 2 all stars from tipperary despite not even winning a provincial title so if players are good enough they will get nominated. Carlow, for all the good they did this season did not merit a nomination.
