Joe Canning for Hurler of the Year

Congrats Joe, I thought the first point against Waterford was an awesome demonstration of power and intent. He was the game changer.

He was excellent all year though.A thoroughly deserved win for Joe.

To those that disagree with Joe Canning being Hurler of the Year: was there ever a year when he DID deserve it but did not get it due to someone else getting it or was he never ever worthy of the Hurler of the Year?

Ya his first year in 2008 (despite KK sweeping all before him he deserved senior player of the year). Excellent club campaign and excellent debut year at senior. But unfortunately you don't get hurler of the year anymore unless you get to the final at least

I can understand Galway people defending Joe

The reality is this whole process stinks when the guy who actually deserved Player of the year wasn't even shortlisted for political reasons

There will always be an asterisk after Joe's name as Player of the Year 2017 which is a pity.

Nonsense! I don't think that its that important, Joe already has the biggest prize to be won this or any other year, an All Ireland medal.

The award was won last year by a player who didn't make the final! A case can be made for a number of players most years and there is no doubt Canning is a deserving winner this year. However having the players vote for the winner makes little sense - I know a number of players who would watch very few games each year. Instead they will be playing or training with their clubs when intercounry games are on, or just out living life rather than spending their Sundays watching provincial games.

Congratulations to Canning.

And to certain begrudgers, dry your eyes.

As buff would say " that was a bad statement by me"!
I do agree that players aren't the best judges. How many players seen Tipp -Westmeath or Tipp- Dublin this year for example? None from outside those counties.
A lot of people missed the KK - Waterford game also as it was on Sky. And why would they actually care either? As you say they have their own commitments.
It's amazing how pundits selections can be so far removed from the players votes which means someone must be wrong.
One thing that can't be questioned though is that the last two years have thrown up far more debate on this forum than any other year beforehand.

His stats that year were off the scale. This year is probably his poorest return from play and amazingly the first year he didn't score a goal (one year out of 8/9 isn't bad going!), albeit playing much further from the goals. I'd be surprised if next year you don't see Canning doing a few 10 min stints at full forward as Donoughue may tweak a few things to bring back a goal threat to the Galway forward line.
Cody constantly tweaked his teams to bring continued success

Cody also brought in new players and even a successful team needs to be freshened up.galway will need one or two new players next year to retain their title.

Already have the likes of Tom Monaghan and Sean Loftus getting some exposure this year, added with the fact plenty of competition on the bench can't see too many changes in personal maybe Cyril and Colm might go as both are past 30.

My reference to an asterisk is more a mental one which people will have.

I've nothing but admiration for Joe.

My beef is the way the GAA steered the sheep.

Wrongs? You didn't answer the question at all. Did he EVER deserve it? Are you saying he was wronged in the past and got this years award due to that?

2008? That was the year he scored almost all Galway's total against Cork I think. And they still lost. Yeah it's the finals or nothing anymore I guess.

Ya that's the one year that springs to mind but I'm sure there were others too. He will go down as one of the greats but I'll stand by my opinion on this year

Apologies - I thought your question/comment was an insinuation

Unfortunately I'm unable to answer your question - My memory inst sufficient enough to make an accurate stab at the answer
