We've been here before though.......haven't we..... Don't get me wrong champ. I would love to see Limerick or Clare win an All-Ireland before Kilkenny (I am from Wexford after all). My only point was, don't get carried away and think U21 success means senior success is just around the corner. Remember the last time Limerick won 3 in a row? The step up is absolutely massive. My original post was more a dig at Ger Loughnane and a bit of defending Kilkenny, who set the bar and are still the Barcelona of the game, than at Limerick. Ger says it as he sees it. That was an average KK team and Limerick won well. Those are the facts. Clareman (Clare) - Posts: 1056 - 14/09/2017 11:17:29 2045921 Link 0 |

Loughnane is far from a hurler on the ditch! He managed a team to 2 all irelands that had won none in 81 years. Clareman (Clare) - Posts: 1056 - 14/09/2017 15:00:34 2045990 Link 1 |
Pinkie I would put not that much emphasis on that three in a row for the following reasons (1) right through the three years they struggled in Munster, drawing twice with Tipp and once with Cork and only beat Wexford by a point in one final and Galway simply did not turn in 2002, however they gave Limerick very close games in 2000 and 2001 (2) The team was built around four or five strong men who were just out of minors ranks in 2000 and they backboned the team over the three years (3) Several of the team also won Provincial under 21 medals in 2000 and went to the All Ireland Final that year and more importantly went on to be dual stars. For a number of years as many as 6 potential hurlers in Limerick in that period devoted themselves entirely to football. (4) Too many of that team were brought on too quick to senior ranks and their manager Dave Keane got no realistic chance as senior manager to help them achieve their goals. For what its worth i think this Limerick crop has far more potential than the 2000-03 group. It has more individually gifted players. Clareman (Clare) - Posts: 1056 - 14/09/2017 15:54:51 2046017 Link 0 |
Gilly Why did you not ask to come back into Munster in 2009, after all when ye were here before, from 59 to 69, ye were allowed to compete at all levels and it is possible this played a small part in making ye the great hurling county ye are now. Were there many from last years U21 team, on this years Kilkenny U21 team? Marlon_JD (Tipperary) - Posts: 1823 - 15/09/2017 17:16:33 2046284 Link 0 |

I thought they did at one point. Anyway they tried hard but Limerick were clearly the better team.

Ger has to eat his words about michael donoghue now and about galway hurlers! tjcentrehalfbak (Galway) - Posts: 28 - 16/09/2017 16:39:48 2046458 Link 1 |
He doesn't really. Galway have fine hurlers and are very well balanced. But don't tell me if Kevin Moran had taken on the last man and got a goal that Galway would have thrown in the towel again. For me they need to win another. They are just the same as Clare 2013 at the moment. An All Ireland is an All Ireland but...

Well they are a bit different to Clare in that it's the 3rd final a lot of those Galway players have reached. Clare got to the one final, won it but haven't been anywhere near one either before or since. That could change in the future of course.

Who does a team have to win another all Ireland to be considered a great team? 1 would do me at any time. And for that matter our team of the 90s or Waterford of the 00s didn't win an all Ireland but I would consider them both to be great teams. mike03 (Limerick) - Posts: 2000 - 17/09/2017 09:32:18 2046589 Link 0 |
Truth is he has eaten his words (and rightly so) cos he praised Micheal Donoghue after the final. Every All Ireland is hard won. This Galway team and management have nothing more to prove. 2018 is another year and we, like every other team out there, will take it as it comes.

I'd have to agree with you there. I also think whether people agree or not that tradition plays a part too. Look at that cork team that came out of nowhere this year and how well they done. These guys grow up believing that they are destined to play on big days in thurlus and corner, its in their make up to believe that. Same as any traditional county. Then the likes of Waterford and mayo have a tradition of being nearly men, winning the hearts of general public but no medals. That mentality of not being able to get over the line then eats into fellas heads and can't be easy to get rid of.
