Loughnanes views on Kilkennys U21 team

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

As a neutral I was hoping Limerick would win..which they did..they did wobble a little near the end but had enough in the tank to see them through..Kilkenny just never got going on Saturday from what I seen...it doesn't make them a terrible team, that happens sometimes, not often to Kilkenny I know but it does and will happen...Limerick weren't the usual fluent self either compared to some to their performances all year, but played way better than Kilkenny and won on the day...

Didnt see the match on Saturday but I did see Kilkenny against Westmeath earlier in the Championship and thought they were very limited and if you like - very un-Kilkenny like. Ger is not far off - probably a little dramatic about it all but sure thats what he does and as a result here we are talking about him and his Irish Daily Star article - http://www.hoganstand.com/kilkenny/ArticleForm.aspx?ID=275598

Right from the off limerick were sharper and hungrier for the ball kilkenny just couldn't get going , and in fairness to them they are not that bad of a team just didn't turn up but yet again loughnane comes out from under his rock to have ago at kilkenny and cody it's about time someone told this clown to shut up he was on a team who regularly bottled it on the big stage .

What does it say about teams that Kilkenny beat ? They really must be rubbish , doubt that's the case .

Ger has waited about 40 years in the long grass to have a pop at a Kilkenny team any Kilkenny team - how brave - how futile.

The reason they got to the final is because the competition was lobsided this year. You'd rank Limerick out on their own as the best team. Not far behind are Galway, Cork and Waterford. Tipp had a good win over Kilkenny earlier in the summer. So at best that Kilkenny team is ranked 6th or 7th. Limerick vs Galway/Cork/Waterford would have been a much better final.

I agree. I'm not having a pop at Kilkenny but that's their position this year. Physically they were dominated by Limerick aswell. Could hardly win a high ball in the forwards. Ger Loughnane will like relaying the message but when i think of the U21 teams of 1990, 2004, 2006 especially that team is poor. It's something that's common after senior dominance. Kerry footballers 1986-94, Cork hurlers post 2005 and now KK the underage seems to slip a little. Does a little complacency set in or is it just the natural ebb and decline of success? I watched KK minors hammer Laois this year. Laois were poor but i remember saying to my brother that there was no real standout talent on the KK team. Again to use a Loughnane metaphor they were 'functional'. Now i know they played a tight semi with Galway in the minor after but goals at the right time flattered them a bit. It's difficult to produce minors of the 2002-2003 ilk constantly, Richie Power, John Tennyson, Cha Fitz etc. I think only now do we recognise how great the 2006-2009 team was. I actually think KK may have a few lean years. There 3 best players Richie Hogan, TJ Reid and Mick Fennelly, if fit to play, will be 30, 30 and 33. After the U21 finalists of 2012 (Buckley, Walter Walsh, Aylward) i honestly don't see the same calibre of player coming through. That's not having a go at anyone. Just speaking my mind. See KK at that 1996-98 stage.

I actually agree with Loughnane about Galway entering the minor and U21 Leinster grade bringing up the standard in the province. A Leinster team, Kilkenny hasn't won the all-ireland u21 since 2008. That's a long spell. In minor a Leinster team has only won one minor since 2010. KK in 2014, against the odds. That's major underage dominance by Galway and Munster teams.

Westmeath could have beaten them (again) KK now go for big direct players at U21 and senior over lighter more skillful players. you'd also wonder how poor Derry were

Kilkenny lost last years all-Ireland, then this year's U21 then the camogie. Three in a row! Did they pass by a funeral in 2015 I wonder.

Hard to say that Kilkenny are the 7th best under 21 team. There are no rankings and there are only one off games. Kilkenny were very impressive in Leinster. They had to play three games and were good in all of them. They came up against a very good Limerick side who have been favorites from day one. Kilkenny don't need all of these lads to progress to senior. You ever only get a handful from each team anyway. Cody will introduce a few of these lads. When they are playing next to TJ, the Fennellys, Cillian Buckley etc they will do alright. Loughnane and others were fawning over Kilkenny a few years ago when they were winning. In true tabloid style, you kick them when they are down. As Somebody else said, the fact that we are talking about it shows it is working.

Eddie Brennan's head is set for the chopping block...this team is capable of playing much better than that....

They were robbed in 2015 of reaching all Ireland minor final.

Three words which spring to mind when I hear the word agricultural are 1. Lazy 2. Inefficient 3. Overpaid I don't think the Kilkenny under 21s are any of those ;)

By Kilkenny standards they were poor , but that's a good Limerick team. Remember KK still contested the Minor and U21 finals. Loughnane might be better off concentrating on the fortunes of his own County rather than slagging off Kilkenny for a few quid. He didn't make much of a fist of Galway when he was Manager .

Are you having a cut off farmers??! Agricultural to me means lacking in thought and subtlety in a sporting sense.

They will do 'alright' is correct Benny when introduced with the others you mentioned but they're not as talented players as KK produced 10 years ago.

It's not because Loughnane said it John that i agree. After watching the game on Saturday i felt it was the worst KK hurling championship performance i could ever remember. 1995 minors against Cork was bad too. I wanted to say so here but then felt that it would appear ungracious to Limerick. Limerick are a good team but they are not as brilliant as has been stated. They actually gave KK too much respect. Cian Lynch should have slipped in a forward to his left for a goal chance in the first half. They hit a lot of wides and kept Kilkenny in the game.
