Poor enough final I thought, though the weather conditions probably didn't help much. Felt sorry for the Kilkenny back that turned the ball over just before the winning point for Cork. Gleebo (Mayo) - Posts: 2208 - 10/09/2017 17:50:08 2044654 Link 0 |
Well done Cork. Riona Buckley seems like a great leader and person. I'd say the wind had an effect Gleebo. It was intense enough! Laois76 (Laois) - Posts: 1270 - 10/09/2017 17:59:43 2044655 Link 26 |
Yeah, 18 All-Ireland medals is some going alright. Did Briege Corkery retire this season?

In camogie a goalie is just another outfield player they can be tackled just like any other player on the field hence the same jersey any player can puck the ball out for instance. Conditions didn't help at all, but Camogie like hurling is adjusting to a more defensive game now. For instance Kilkenny pull the entire half back line in when defending. So yeah makes for low scoring games. BTW I thought the ref robbed Meath by blowing up when she did, arock (Dublin) - Posts: 4895 - 10/09/2017 19:54:30 2044690 Link 1 |
Ref poor for Meath in the intermediate! Robbed Liamwalkinstown (Dublin) - Posts: 8166 - 10/09/2017 20:11:46 2044696 Link 0 |
Refereeing in the Intermediate game was poor in my opinion. Never used advantage and gave some baffling calls on both sides. Cork red card was very soft, free in lead up to cork goal was equally soft and as for the decision at the end...

Definitely so, the one in the senior game could have given Kilkenny another day as well

To be honest Liam, I thought the Ref gave Meath every close call apart from the final one. corkcelt (Cork) - Posts: 4388 - 10/09/2017 20:29:52 2044707 Link 0 |
Following a quick check of old photos, it seems that hurling goalies started wearing distinctive jerseys in 1975; the footballers changed in 1963. tommy58 (Dublin) - Posts: 169 - 10/09/2017 20:35:53 2044709 Link 0 |
I don't know Gleebo tbh. The few Cork ladies football games i saw on tv she wasn't playing. Briege is 30 like Rena. So not old but a lot of mileage. The camogie and ladies football ladies really don't get enough credit. The games are unrecognisable in skill level from 25 yrs ago. All very skilled practioners now.

In camogie a goalie is just another outfield player they can be tackled just like any other player on the field hence the same jersey any player can puck the ball out for instance. Are you sure about this? I mean isn't it the same in hurling? (Besides the same jersey). Cockney_Cat (UK) - Posts: 2446 - 10/09/2017 20:46:45 2044716 Link 0 |
What I couldn't understand was why the ref in the inter final didn't just blow full time from the puck-out. Why let play develop for ten seconds only to blow when Meath had a chance to score? Just bringing unwanted controversy on herself. ballydalane (Kilkenny) - Posts: 1246 - 10/09/2017 21:08:51 2044727 Link 0 |
Yes, Briege Corkery returned from both camogie and hurling earlier in the season. Went with little or no fanfare. Another legend of the games. football first (None) - Posts: 1259 - 10/09/2017 21:24:12 2044731 Link 1 |
I think its probably more of a tradition and the differences are more subtle as you say the same is in hurling just a different jersey.

Not sure Briege is gone. Think she just took a year out, & has left the option of returning next year open. Briege is actually a few months younger than Rena. corkcelt (Cork) - Posts: 4388 - 10/09/2017 22:08:49 2044749 Link 0 |
I think both Kilkenny & Cork are overdoing the tactics. They're often counter-productive & lot of the time the teams end up cancelling each other out.

Referee in the first game blew for frees that were not fouls and never played advantage rule. Then she robbed Meath of a deserved victory. bennybunny (Cork) - Posts: 3917 - 11/09/2017 23:02:50 2045100 Link 0 |
At least they deserved a draw the way they hurled in the second half , Cork went long stretches with out scoring as they did against Galway in the semifinal.

Sweeper system is literally tailor made for camogie as they don't have the same range in terms of scoring.
