Babs Keating's criticism of Derek McGrath

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Babs thinks Derek McGrath should get the sack if Waterford lose today. Why? Because the sweeper system "breaks the traditional hurling rules" and Babs doesn't like it: link
The arrogance of this hurling dinosaur is beyond belief. Offaly and Michael Ryan gave the perfect answer to his condescending, patronising guff in 1998. The likes of him and Eddie Keher are only happy when the big 3 are winning everything.

if memory serves me correct he had a right go at tipp hurlers after they lost in munster over their 'soft office jobs'...tipp went on to win the all ireland that year im pretty sure

Antrim haven't got great memories of him either. A very arrogant, angry man who doesn't seem to have a good word about anyone or anything. (That could be me too lol).

Wouldn't agree with Keating but still think Waterford are too defensive under Derek McGrath. They have talented players and should be more attack minded.

We stopped listening to Babs years ago in Tipp. It is very condescending stuff.

I have nothing against the sweeper system, McGrath and Davy Fitz have every right to set their teams up whatever way they see fit.

I do think the Waterford forwards are better now than when McGrath took charge and there was scope to go a little bit more offensive. I felt Waterford reverted back towards 2015 this year, with the one man full forward line. You need at least two men in there.

Getting back to Babs, it is easy for him to say that when Tipp won last year after a 6 year gap. Waterford's wait will be at least 59 years now. I don't think any Waterford fan would give two [email protected] how they won one now cos that's too long a gap for a county that has given so much to this wonderful sport.

Babs comes across as a very bitter man to me his comments / attack on mc grath was uncalled for. He was ran out of offaly in 98 because his methods were not up to much and offaly go and win the All-Ireland.

Shows you the type of person Babs Keating is.

The rubbish Derek McGrath has had to put up with really ticks me off.The man dared to do something a little different from most managers and all the "hurling men" can't bear the idea of it actually being a success and seem to want to undermine him at every given opportunity.I'd love to see McGrath get an all ireland with this team , to take a leave of absence from your job show you the sort of passion he has for Waterofrd hurling and it would be great to see it being rewarded.

people doing the same thing in football that he has gotten the idea from are also treated with a lot of negativity including by yourself

like a lot of players/ managers from that era only them and their team played the game right in both codes. loves the sound of his own voice

I hope Derek stays on, he comes across as a very genuine person, and he looked devastated today. His style of play gets alot of criticism, but every year they seem to improve their system that little bit, and get that bit better. They got to an AI final this year, beating Kilkenny, a very good Wexford team, and a resurgent Cork team. Somethings working, and a system that allows a team to score 13 goals in the championship, including 4 each against Kilkenny and Cork, can't be all bad.

And I imagine the players have massive respect and affection for him. They've bought into his approach, and I think they'd give him 100% next year again if he stayed on. Except next year, they'd be equipped with the experience of having played in an AI final, and the confidence of knowing they were able to handle the pressure and compete to the last puck. If he stays on Waterford will be AI contenders next year. If he leaves, it may take a few years for them to get back to this stage, especially if they change their system/style of play. I hope he gives it another lash.

A la Micky Harte and Tyrone who you have been critical off. Anyway let's stay on topic.
Babs seems to have a bee in his bonnet. Very egotistical and arrogant. I'm at the stage where I feel sorry for him.

I don't like overly defensive football as it's not entertaining to watch and I don't think it works very well anymore. I've never denied that it can be effective at times or had a hang up with one particular individual over it, I've never suggested a manager should resign because I don't like the style of play, I've never acted like it's a betrayal of the sport to do it even if it's effective.

Derek McGrath is being treated like he's ruined the sport by doing what he's done when in fact he's just made his team more competitive. He's playing within the rules, you want rid of defensive play then change the rules (which I have argued before).

There's a difference between critiquing a style of play which we all do and thinking that even though a manger is successful employing a style of play he should have to change to keep the old guard happy which is what a lot of "hurling men" have been doing with Derek McGrath.

I've been critical of the current Tyrone team because I argued they were too one dimensional, turns out I was 100% right.

There is a difference between critiquing a style of play and being obsessed with one individual and blaming him for ruining the game because he tried something different.

The big issue with what Keating said is that he said McGrath should be gone if they don't win.

Waterford have got to 1 all ireland final in the 50 years before Derek McGrath took the job so it's ridiculous to view losing a final as meaning the manager should have to go.

You seem to enjoy saying how right you are. All hail the guru of gaa.
Tyrone changed things in the second half keeping 3-4 forwards up. Then they went man for man. Still got hammered.

PS "Puke football" "follows Tyrone around like a bad smell." Brolly's tirade etc.
Trust me, Tyrone have been branded the destroyers of football for over a decade.

you enjoy when certain teams playing that style lose...stop trying to act superior...all teams play defensive football in certain situations..we set up no different last week at times...expecting the dubs to beat tyrone isnt exactly a big call...we were strong favourites....tyrone did change the way they set up in the second half leaving a lot more players up however it simply didnt work..you love slating teams playing styles and acting superior yet i dont see any suggestions on what they should have done..the only crime this tyrone team are guilty of is they simply arent good enough to win an all ireland..no shame in it to be honest

Tyrone never really gave themselves a chance in the first place with their tactics. If they did what Donegal did in 2011 and put pressure on Dublin you wouldn't mind but they just backed off them completely.

Tactics and management are supposed to give a you a chance of winning , which is what McGrath has done with Waterford it's up to the players to take that chance in the game and execute.Tyrone on the other hand had no chances as their game plan didn't give them one.

I don't think they have , most people acknowledge the team of the 00's played excellent football.

People in Tyrone are just too sensitive about any criticism of their team that's all.

Tyrone were hyped up by the media and it had a lot of people convinced they had a genuine chance of beating Dublin.

The only way to have a chance against Dublin is to be positive , they've worked out the blanket defence by now and I did say that before the game that Dublin would be praying Tyrone play ultra defensively and sadly they did.
