Cluxton for POTY?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I See Stevo is neck and neck in the betting for POTY with Andy Moran
It would just cap off an incredible career, he has won everything else he could.
The betting at the moment is
Cluxton, Stephen 3/1
Moran, Andy 3/1
O'Callaghan, Con 6/1
McCaffrey, Jack 7/1
Rock, Dean 10/1
McCarthy, James 10/1
O'Shea, Aidan 14/1
Boyle, Colm 16/1
Kilkenny, Ciaran 16/1
Fenton, Brian 25/1

A good final for Moran/Cluxton could be the difference.

For what its worth, Cluxton has been ridiculously good this year. Its gas when he does something wrong, its so rare people lose their shit! When he is peak cluxton controlling games, no one says a word!

What are you on about that nobody says a word when he is on form? Seriously like? Stephen Cluxton (and rightly so) has been consistently held up as the man who has redefined the position of goalkeeper forever and is widely considered to be the best goalkeeper of all time. I'm not sure what other praise can be heaped on him if that isn't sufficient.

Clarke has been phenomenal this year. Cluxton has had an armchair ride this season in comparison.

Would love him to get it but again, any errors in the final and he'll miss out.

James McCarthy has been as consistently as good as anyone. Defending, fielding, attacking, points, goals...he's the whole package. Good odds too especially if he has a good final.

I thought the way he said goodbye to Sean Cavanagh spoke volumes of this shy, quiet yet determined man.

Keith Higgins I feel should be in contention for Mayo. McCarthy could be a good bet at those prices.

Steo or Kilkenny for me, how Kilkenny is such long odds is amazing. but will depend on who wins the final and i would have no problem with any of the Mayo lads winning if that was the case, can see another split vote fiasco to like last year.

Kilkenny for me is Dublin's most important player.

James McCarthy remains one of the most underrated players in the country, can play anywhere and excel, ive never seen him give less than an 8/10 performance. Seems to have everything yet he seems to always slip under the radar, does he even have an allstar yet? He seems to be one of those low profile players that just seems to get overlooked

Andy Moran would be my own shout on this market.

Maybe so....But a good day for Moran might mean a not so good day for Cluxton. In fairness I think Clarke as a keeper has had the better campaign. He has improved on the area that may have cost him his place last year and he is prob the best trad style keeper.

I thought Cluxton should have won POTY in 2013 when Michael Darragh won it. This year I'd say Andy Moran has been the best player closely followed by Colm Boyle, Cluxton, Jack McCaffrey & Con O'Callaghan in no particular order. I guess it will depend on who wins the final.

It would be a shame if Cluxton never wins it but he seems the kind of guy who really wouldn't care about personal accolades, I like that about him, seems a really modest person who just plays his football.

Higgins back to his best in recent games. Was odd that AOS got MOTM in the Rosscommon replay when it was KH who done all the damage and effectively ended the game. That's sort of how it is though. Media seem to take to certain players for the limelight. Even our own Jack McCaffrey. A great player but again tends to be a shoe in for MOTM even though, to me, McCarthy generally gets the team going and remains error free throughout the 70. He was my MOTM on Sunday and my POTY the year a few times.

For me its between Andy Moran and Con O'Callaghan they would be my favourites. For cluxton to be considered surely means Clarke has to be considered too cluxton kick out supreme but there is no questioning Clarke is the better stopper at the moment because he is under pressure where as cluxton hasn't been. Colm Boyle has been an absolute warrior this year took over from keegan , keith Higgins excellent too. James Mc Carthy superb possibly out performing fenton. Kevin mc glaughlan paul geaney tiernan McCann, ciarain Kilkenny all very consistent all have not had a bad game.

But unfortunately its who has the best games and for me its the battle of the forwards this year con or andy. Either of these perform or dont perform determines the destination of sam and I think that is a fitting way to determine who is the best.

It depends on the final and who performs. Andy Moran was sensational against Kerry but we didn't half make it easy for him by leaving Enright marking him when he was clearly struggling. If he goes on to have a big final and Mayo win he would be a good bet. O'Callaghan or Cluxton would be worthy recipients too IMO, as would McCarthy.

About 30 mins into the Dublins first league game up in Breffni Park, I said that James McCarthy would win player of the year. He was the best player in the national league IMO (but johnny Cooper was last year and didn't get a look in come september)

He probably won't now that he's still only 10/1 but he is a fantastic all round player.

Andy or Con depending on the final.

yeah good point, he did well but Kerry made no change in either game to deal with him. He was doing very well in the SF final replay a couple of years back against Dublin. Dublin reacted and brought on Michael Fitz who done a very good job marking him. Would imagine he will again pick him up in the final.

James McCarthy is a funny one
I love the man, always have. Probably the most natural footballer on the team when you watch him ball in hand, its graceful and class personified. Never ever loses possession, always scores a point or two, he is just diff class...
Now that he is in MF it will make it easier to get the recognition he deserves, yet, up to this year if you asked 100 fans to pick their best half back line in ireland, very few would have him. Then you remind them of McCarthy and its like.."oh ya...hhmmm"

He should really have won it in 2013. MDMA was blessed to win it imo.

Same as Jack McCaffrey in 2015 as well.

He did have a bit of a boo boo against Derry. Key part of the game and coulda been costly against a better team... couple of bad kick outs in the first game against Kerry and not great against Galway. So not an imperious championship by any means.
