John Evans - new Wicklow manager

(Oldest Posts First)

Tonight the Wicklow County Board ratified the appointment of John Evans as manager of the senior football team. Obviously he has his work cut out for him. Has anyone any views on Evans and what we are getting with him. Please no comments about the Wicklow team. We know where we are at the moment.

I think he's a good appointment. Has done well in Tipp and Roscommon to a lesser extent.

Wicklow always have good footballers. Early 90s had a fine team. Damn close to beating Meath in the drawn game in 1991. Best of luck to ye.

No dis respect nothing again the man but I can tell you that this isnt totally popular by a long chalk here in Wicklow and one club in particular. Ructions outside abefore and after a county board meeting tonight. Selection committee made a hames of the job they were given and some very unhappy stalwarts will be waiting in the long grass to be sure.

I know a lot in Tipp and Roscommon who dont think he would be a great appointment. What I'm told is he'll do a good job in the 1 st year it falls away after that.

The wicklow team has never been lower and the standard of this years senior championship is the worst ever seen and thats not just my opinion but of many a long suffering supporter. He has no chance of getting any where near promotion out of divsion 4 the players arent there and a lot of the better ones wont commit that I can guarantee you.

Great work being done at underage mind and thats where any money that this is costing should be spent. Like with micko were spending money on the wrong team. No point spending money on the current crop.

Did a great job with Tipp, got the team promoted from division 4 to division 2 and to hands on role in developing underage teams. He is a great appointment for Wicklow.

Some other poster (from Wicklow) came on here a couple of months ago saying how bad it was in Wicklow in terms of competition there - ie the amounts of walkovers given, the fact that there is no under 21 championship. If any of that is true, then they are the issues that need addressing before Wicklow goes anywhere. If any of what Pat Mustard says is true, ye are not off to a good start.

Where do ye see yourselves going? What is the highest Wicklow can achieve? Traditionally, ye have never won any provincial or All-Ireland championship at county level. That is not to say that there have not been good footballers from Wicklow. Baltinglass, An Tochar, Rathnew have had some fine sides. Baltinglass proved that they were the best in the country. There is no reason why it can't happen again. But will it?

For now, best of luck with John Evans appointment.

Highly rated in Meath , and he was just a selector for a few months. Should probably have been given job after banty went. Did fantastic work with Roscommon getting them to div 1 but wasn't appreciated. Tipp record speaks for itself.
Good appointment imo

If Wicklows sole objective is to get out of Div 4 then John Evans should be a good appointment.

He was given three years with Roscommon which is longer than most outside managers get. In those three years he didn't even lead Roscommon to a Connacht final and they suffered championship exits in 2014,2015 to teams they should be beating. John Evans is a good league manager and club manager but he didn't cut it at county championship level with Tipp or Roscommon.

Top class appointment for Wicklow, a manager with a proven track record in the promotion business. The Mustard lad on here got burned on his own forum, take a look on the Wicklow page, dont mind his sour grapes, if he is involved at county board level in Wicklow then im glad the group in charge of this appointment gave them the 2 fingers and picked the right man instead of the cheap option!

You are totally wrong about the Roscommon people. He was loved in Roscommon and espeically by the players. His man management is the best i have seen. An excellent manager and great with youth.

Wicklow county board have pulled off a great appointment and he is most definitely the best canditate out there for the job in Wicklow's current situation. He will put in structures for the future of wicklow football like he has already done in Roscommon and Tipperary which is badly needed over there. He needs time but he will do a great job with Wicklow i expect

Could you tell me where he is going to get the players from we have been beaten out the gate at under age level for the last six or seven years. Unless Wicklow invest big time in an under age structure we are going to remain bottom of the pile managers don't win games players do.
