Just a guess here but I would say it was a comortas Peil Na Gaeltachta match in the mid 90s possibly from Donegal , Kerry , Galway or Cork. I know the 1998 comortas was live from Donegal .

I'd guess 1996 or 97.

Great question - for which i' don't have an answer........ I've been to many a Tra nagCeist, and funny this question has never come up...... put me out of my misery

I would say as TG4 came on air in late October 1996, it was probably the following yr before it covered matches, and it was club matches, so an early County Final in 1997 in Donegal maybe!!!!!

First national league matches were in 2002. Cork v Tyrone one of the earliest ones.

Tnag4 first came on air on Oct 31st 1996. Mary Robinson who was the president at the time made an opening speech. I think the first league match broadcast was Cork and Kerry in 2003.

Yes opening night was Halloween 1996!

I remember watching the rugby Leinster Schools Final on St. Patrick's Day 1997. But for the life of me can't remember the first gaa game. RTE definitely had the club finals on in 1997 on Patrick's Day. I think Athenry and Wolfe Tones Clare were in the hurling? Must check that.

The 1998 comortas Peil Na Gaeltachta in Falcarragh was the first comortas to be shown live by TnaG. Bit of guess work here but ill say the first match shown live was Clochaneeley V An Cathar Rua the semi final.

Fair play Murt. Excellent info there. O'Domhnaill and De Paor blaying for An Ceathru Rua. I'm afraid i don't know any players from Clochaneeley.
