Referee of the Year Awards

(Oldest Posts First)

We have all stars and players of the year, young player etc for players. Maybe the better referees should be awarded with best hurling and football referee of the year awards, best newcomer??

Some little award, incentive for the maligned men in the middle. I ref underage and just refereed an U8 and U10 match this week and some supporters were heated. It really brings home what it must be like at a serious level.

Everyone at some stage has seen a mad man of a father run out onto the pitch shouting at the ref at his son's U-10/12's game before.

Shur i know GameofTyrones.

But it's still annoys you when you're at the end of a long day's work etc and doing something voluntarily while Mr. Pitch Invader is only concerned about his little Johnny.

Still made a massive mistake in the Mayo v Roscommon game the last day, We would have been hammered anyway but with the game at 6-2 he allowed McLoughlin hop the ball twice in a row on his way to scoring his goal. Made no difference in the end but at that level Refs cant be missing things like that. David Gough the best still IMO

Gough is far too inconsistent. The players need to know exactly what constitutes a foul and what doesnt and you never know where you stand with Gough.

Conor Lane, Maurice Deegan and David Coldrick all better IMO.

Refereeing the all ireland final is essentially a "best referee" award. Tho Mcquillan has done it twice so who knows.

Nolan had a damn good game. Missed 1 call as it turned out a big 1 A goal was scored from it. When you talk about most of the rest Lane Deegan Coldrick and McQuillan and even Gough it's numerous calls. It's the lack of consistency in the calls player A gets a free player B doesn't for the same tackle And I'm not going to talk about the Black Card interpretation

Very few deserve anything, too many major mistakes and mistakes cost matches, imagine in a match if a big county won a penalty against a so called weaker county and a player sent off yet evidence proves the call was wrong and should have a free out, at the time the scores were level yet with 15 playing 14 and a soft penalty goal ahead the stronger team pushes on and thrashes the weaker team, where was the turning point? The wrongful penalty and sending off. Refs and officials are getting too much protection after games with no manager allowed to comment on decisions otherwise there could be fines for the co board. Now I haven't watched last Sunday's game again to see every decision but on a few occasions both Mayo and Kerry players should have been shown black cards, a high tackle by a Kerry midfielder should have been a straight red, as some have said a Mayo played faked an injury that's a black card incident, a few times double hops, over carrying, picking the ball straight off the ground by both sides were ignored, it's ok for pundits to say the ref was great for letting the game flow but fouls are fouls and if you let them go then what's the point of having a referee

As you said I think you need to re watch the match.

Kerry player red card, come on it was a Yellow and no more. off the top of my head I cant think of one instance where a black was warranted. Of course there are going to be 'fouls' that are missed, but if you blew for every will contact then youd be stopped more than the play on. I think people are starting to watch a bit too much soccer. We play a physical contact sport and not every contact is a free.
