Hurling All Stars 2017

Replying To tearintom:  "Wexford have a centre back in the form of Matthew O Hanlon who had an outstanding league campaign and then went on in the championship to mark Walter Walsh, Joe Canning and Austin Gleeson holding all 3 of them to a total of 2 points from play whilst contributing 3 points from play himself.

If that's not a real candidate for an all star I'm not sure what is?"
Can't argue with that. Its probably unfair but it's very difficult to win an All-Star without reaching at least a semi-final. Last time this did happen was in 2012.

You're spot on with O'Hanlon. People have Canning nailed on but he never got one ball in his hand in the Leinster final never mind scoring."
I recall Canning catching one great ball in midfield in the Leinster final. He scored 11 points in the Leinster final too,I know all bar a lineball were frees but some of those frees were from inside his own half.
Not bad for a lad with a knee injury that needed surgery.

He didn't have surgery and he doesn't need too. Regardless of that he was marked out of it anyway

With all due respect most people kept him quiet this year. In the current format it will be hard to get one if you don't reach the latter stages of the championship which is wrong anyway.

It's always a sad state of affairs that to get an all star from a weaker county that doesn't reach semi final championship stage you have to be twice as good as a player from a stronger county who does reach it.

I always think back to John Taylor Laois missing out to Dermot McCurtain Cork in 1984. Taylor was excellent in the league for Laois (reached the quarter final) and in reaching the Centenary Cup final. He was man of the match when Laois lost to KK in the first round of the championship. No back door obviously. Little exposure at the business end cost him.

Tommy doyle of westmeath deserves a nomination surely...got player of the week one of tge weeks, kept seamus callinan off the ball a lot in thurlas, and roasted shane dooley only for a couple of v lucky goals, and was on the leinster team last year,, definitely a nomination

You seem to have a bee in your bonnet about Canning. It's the common consensus that his role has changed . He is playing deeper, is foraging and is linking the play. That is work that is less noticeable than what he did in the past. He is working hard and doing well. Yes he had a very quiet Leinster Final but this fifteen minutes you actually give him credit was a second half of courage, leadership and magnificent hurling.

Joe injured himself in the final training session before the Leinster final. He played the final injured. Had it been a regular league game he would not have played but it was a Leinster final. A big game so he toughed it out. He missed the round of club games the following weekend and was limping quite noticeably on the sidelines of Portumna's match.

I don't know if he did or didn't have minor surgery but he was 100% injured up until recently. My own sense is that he's still not 100% but hopefully the 4 weeks after the semi-final give him time to get closer to that.

Speculation. Most players carry some knocks into games. If he was 100% injured he wouldn't be playing!

Yep agreed on the 15 mins but my point is you cant get an All Star on 15 mins. Rewatch the last two games and you'll see he touched the ball from play a total of 3 times in the two matches. That's hardly link play

He scored 3 great points from play when it counted against Tipp . He also scored 0-08 from placed balls including a sideline cut and a magnificent long range free late on . He has played in 7 league and 4 championship matches this season. He has scored 3-70. If he has an influence on the final he will be picked because that's the way the All Stars work.

I know Nash is the obvious choice for goalkeeper but could I make a case for Stephen O'Keeffe? 3 goals conceded in 5 games, 3 clean sheets and 2 absolutely superb saves v Cork in the Munster Championship. I know Waterford's set up does lend itself to the concession of fewer goals but I don't think the choice for keeper is as cut and dried as it seems.
