Danny Owens for Offaly Hurlers?

(Oldest Posts First)

its looking more and more likely Offaly will stay within the county this time for a manager, Danny Owens linked in the past, maybe now would be the time, he would a county board man and all that..whoever gets it should set out their stall, and if the county board doesn't honor their promises, come out and say it early...lets sort it for once and for all..likewise with the footballers...

unfortunately being Offaly we might never know if he turned it down or wasn't offered it..no names jumping at the job..thats a huge problem...

Just like when Liam Dunne took over Wexford, this job is not in big demand, and also there is no point in Offaly spending money which could be spent on grass roots development instead of on a high-profile manager.
Better to give everything to underage for 5 years, and maybe target a minor or U21.
One thing for sure, nobody likes where Offaly hurling is at the moment.

I remember when Sambo McNaughton was asked a few years ago about the demise of Antrim hurling and whether Brian Cody could turn it round, his response was this; "We don't need a Brian Cody, we need a Ned Quinn".

Offaly are in the same boat, so it doesn't matter who manages the senior team, its more important to get the structures right at underage, development squads, club fixtures and resources in place.
By all accounts the current Offaly CB haven't that drive or vision going by the resignation and statements coming out from the committee set up to review and improve Offaly hurling and football.

The solutions always have to come from within!

problem with saving big money on a manager will be a typical Irish result, the savings wont go to where they should but will go towards paying off debt owed on O'Connor Park or the new training facilities in Kilcormac...millions will be spent on the faciliites and yet there wont even be a lick of paint on them when they open..go down the country and you will see logo's and crests etc. painted on the entrance walls etc..

Down don't have a development centre and badly need one as its not easy for the various teams begging, borrowing and stealing pitches from clubs, schools and whoever, but it can be the driving force for good long term.

I'd not worry about the lovely paint and crests stuck on walls, they'll not win AI's for you.

the crests and paint work certainly will not win you anything, but it is a sign of pride in your endevours and hardwork...million spent on a stadium and big ugly grey concrete walls leading upto and into a venue never looks the job and is a sign things are being done rushed and unfinished basically...

What are ya on about lad O Connor park is one of the best facilities in the country , looks fine to me. County board are a shambles now , but for such a small county you now have a top stadium and a centre of excellence, I'd say 20 counties in Ireland would kill for that .

its basics..a bit like Ireland in general..people pump thousands into the insides of the homes (and rightly so for comfort) but don't bother doing anything with outside..facilities are top class no doubting that, but painting the terraces with green white and gold and not painting a concrete wall outside...I see a few GAA grounds the same..huge development and no finishing touch that's all I am saying..

You have to wish him well, hopefully he will get backing and any resources as others have said needs to be put into underage.
