Heard Cashel and Rathcline might be amalgamating to compete in the senior championship.

Straight from the Rathcline GAA facebook page... "While we won the Intermediate Championship, it was decided to remain in the Intermediate championship for 2018 to allow our very young side develop further before embarking on Senior Championship". So I assume that means Fr. Manning Gaels retain senior status, or no?

No, FMG are intermediate for this year. The proposal is that the Cashel/Rathcline amalgamation would be in Group 3 alongside Slashers, Carrickedmond and Granard, but it has to be approved at the next County Board meeting next Tuesday.

I thought the number of of teams in the championship were to be reduced this year ? So if they let Cashel and Rathcline amalgamate they are taking two team's out of the Intermediate championship. It's the usual make it up as they go along.

If Rathcline and Cashel are allowed amalgamate its a disgrace. Rathcline didn't want to go senior few years ago either. Have they no ambition as a club to improve. The only way they will improve is to move forward. There is no difference in the top 2-3 intermediate clubs and the bottom 2-3 senior clubs. So if they amalgamate and go senior and win group 3 then they relegate a proper senior team in group 3. Last year Rathcline and Cashel had 25+ players togged out for there semi final and finals. How can the lesser senior teams compete with that. What would stop Connollys and Fr Manning Gaels do the same. This cant happen.

As far as I am aware it was proposed that Rathcline and Cashel would still play in the intermediate championship as their own entity and also amalgamate together to compete in the senior championship similar to the divisional teams in the Kerry senior championship. I think a couple of years back Bryan Sheehan won an intermediatede championship with his own club St. Mary's Cahirciveen and a senior championship with the South Kerry amalgamation in the same year. I don't think this amalgamation is going ahead anyway so you need not worry. I don't think it was that bad of an idea though, the standard of club football in south Longford is pretty poor so it might have been nice to have a competitive outfit at senior level.

The county board could do with sorting the way they seed the championship first. Last year they had St.Columbas, Killoe and Longford Slashers in one group. The winners of the Championship since 2010. Then they had Dromard who contested two county finals in that period. Why should team's that are not performing get relatively easy groups.

Yes but the 4 teams in the lower group in the senior are nearly the same standard as the top 2-3 teams in the intermediate championship. so why join 2 top intermediate teams and put the against the lower senior. Cashel or Rathcline would put up a good game against say Granard, Fr Manning Gaels, Ballymahon, Mostrim on their own never mind if they joined together. Makes no sense to me at all.

I was just thinking today about the counties around the area and just putting them in pecking order so to speak. Included Roscommon, Sligo, ourselves, yourselves, Westmeath Cavan and Fermanagh. This is the order I would put them in:
Roscommon, Cavan, Westmeath, Fermanagh, Sligo, leitrim and Longford. Thoughts folks????

Are you mad? How can you put Westmeath ahead of Fermanagh(Promoted to Division 2), Westmeath above Longford( Longford finished above them), Sligo above Longford (Longford finished above them) and Leitrim above Longford (Longford finished 3, slightly missing out on promotion where as Leitrim finished FOURTH in division FOUR)????

I am going to give you the benefit of the doubt that you just came onto a Longford forum to stir something and you genuinely don't believe those rankings are accurate??

Also, It has just occurred to me that as it was in this thread maybe you are referring to the club championship in each of the counties listed?

If so I would still stick to my original reply but maybe not in the order I listed. The Westmeath champions were unlucky not to have won Leinster this year and they were very lucky to beat the Longford champions in an earlier round! this is the same Longford champions who the year before could have beaten the All Ireland champions elect in St. Vincents.

The Leinster Club championship is, unlike its intercounty equivalent, is an extremely open and competitive competition. Its very hard to look past the Galway champions or the Mayo champions in connaght, Unless a seasoned team like St. Brigids win in Roscommon. I don't think the Ulster is as competitive as its intercounty equivalent.

Any word on the draw for the Senior championship. Championship likely to commence in June this year. We must be the only county with no plans made for local championship

I think the CB have decided to give the Championships a miss this year....either that or they've completely forgot about doing the draws....neither would surprise me.

The draws will be done next Wednesday night. The delay is due to no-one being certain yet as to whether Ballymahon will stay in Senior or will be allowed to drop down to Intermediate.

What exactly is going on in Ballymahon? Their reserve team won their first league game a few weeks back, but according to the CB website they have now conceded walkovers in their remaining games.
