Tyrone v Donegal

Replying To Donegalman:  "I hope that this year doesn't shape up the same way as 2007. Exactly 10 years ago almost to the day, tyrone and Dooher wiped us out in clones on a hot sunday. We clawed our way back through the back door against Leitrim and Westmeath only to be hammered by Monaghan in Omagh once the hype machine started to tick over in Donegal again. Tyrone went on to lose to Meath in the all ireland quarter final."
You have a good clear memory. I was at that game and Dooher was the leader of the pack that day. I remember enjoying watching the two bold boys from both teams square up Ricey mc mennamin and Kevin Cassidy. It was worth the fee in to witness it. Couldn't remember which year and where it ended for both teams.

A distinct lack of players aged 24 to 29 in that Donegal team, would imagine any successful team would 10/11 players in that age bracket but I'm sure the Donegal lads will tell me its nowhere that number?

It looks like there was too much effort put in to the league campaign although lets wait until the end of the championship before writing Donegal off. I do think Donegal are at a crossroads if the likes of McGlynn & McGee retire at the end of the year then there could be a couple of tough years ahead but if they decided to keep playing and the likes of McLoone & McNealis return to the panel then an Ulster title wouldn't be out of the question.

Replying To bulmccabe:  "its going to be a hell of a quick run down from the hills and the rallying to watch tyrone or just stay in Donegal watch the end of the rally then head to the hotel and watch the game on bbc2. Have to back Donegal for this one by 4-5pts as I can't see tyrone finding a reliable score getter or 2 in the next week. Terrible for a tyrone fan but I believe Donegal have better score getters and a couple of lads who can shoot from distance. Lets hope the weathers better than when we got washed outta ballybofey. Just hope it's agood game of football and we are commenting on it rather than any shenanigans from the players. Heres hoping"
Jaysus. Wild one there.

Brian McGuigan was interviewed before the game on sunday, and he hit the nail on the head. He referred to Tyrone in 2001 and where they were at in terms of age profile and how they got hammered by armagh. There is no disgrace here. I think that we need to be patient with our lads. A run in the back door with a good performance against Longford is all we can ask for now. Its tough having been successful earlier in the decade to find ourselves up to our armpits in blooding in new players. But this is the way the game goes. We have got to accept this for now as donegal supporters. I think that there is a disease among supporters of expecting their players to be all ireland contenders year in year out. While this might be true on paper, it leaves no room for balanced development on the ground. I look forward to seeing our lads the next day out. Who knows after that..

On a more light-hearted note I thought this was hilarious!

Replying To seanie_boy:  "Donegal did show up. They showed up and got beat. This should have been posted on the cliches thread that somebody has started. They played very poorly but they were there. I suspect Rory Gallagher is not feeling the love from his squad. A few years ago donegal players would have literally died on the pitch for Jimmy. They showed up,but with no passion."
I tend to agree with this. It did look like we had no passion. But I wouldn't be to sore on some of the younger Lad's. I very much doubt they were not playing to the best of their ability and giving it their all. It was just a case of it not being good enough against a better organised more physical team.

As for the Clichés. Our recent new member seems somehow strangely familiar.

Tyrone actually beat a very experienced Armagh team by 5 points in 2001 and went on to win the ulster title with a lot of u21s involved including McAnallan and Hughes midfield, Stephen o'neill at centre half forward and Mulligan in the corner. Can't remember the team but have a notion another few u21s started. Armagh had beaten Tyrone in the championship the previous year but it was nothing like the hammering on Sunday.

There are a few similarities between Donegal now and Armagh from the early part of the last decade. Both won an All-Ireland and lost another they could easily have won, and had great success at provincial level. Armagh won a U21 All-Ireland in 2004 and most people thought they were set to be regular contenders but they have struggled to replace some huge players. It's now 9 years since they made an Ulster final. Maintaining success takes a massive effort and a bit of luck also with managerial appointments. A good run in the backdoor this year will hopefully help the young Donegal players to get up to speed with senior championship as they do seem to have the talent.

Oops. Sorry, cant be right all the time. I must have misheard him. The point he made resonated with me though. A great interview before the game by a great player.

He was talking about his own performance, said he had a shocker himself and it was a steep learning curve.

Brian McGuigan may have been talking about the year 2000 when Tyrone lost 0.12-0.8 to a very good Armagh team. It was men against boys and the scoreline does not reflect the gap between the teams. Canavan was injured and came on near the end but it was pitiful. Tyrone played not to lose and Big Art's son was played at midfield to try and match Armagh in the physical stakes. Tyrone then picked the U21 players for the following league and they had a great run including a big win at HQ against Dublin. By the following championship players like Mulligan, O'Neill, McGuigan, Jordan, Hughes etc had all established themselves and a Ulster Championship was the start of a great era.

Great performance by Tyrone.
they had a defensive structure but their game plan was really good to watch.

There was some amount of strolling around by the players at times though especially by Donegal, in possession and walking with the ball.
Not at the races at all.
