Sligo manager Niall Carew admits the main reason he is returning for a fourth year in charge of the Yeats County is that he 'believes' in the players.

The Connacht side had a disappointing campaign in 2017, but Carew was keen to point to the positives, which was that they were competitive in all games they played.

The Kildare native is confident that the depth of talent in the county can propel them to a higher division (currently Division Three), but he added that he only wanted players that want to play for their county.

"When I take the facts into consideration and the players that I have at my disposal, this is why I'm back managing Sligo for my fourth year," Carew writes in his Sligo Champion column.

"Of course you're always hoping that every player will make himself available and it's my job to make sure I do just that. When it comes to player availability, I always think of something Kenny Dalglish said.

"There was speculation about whether or not one of his players wanted to commit to Liverpool when he was manager and he said that the most important people at the club were those that wanted to play for Liverpool.

"He wasn't interested in anyone else. Now of course we are not Liverpool and I'm not King Kenny but there is learning in that statement. I know some will want to travel while others might just want a year out.

"That's where we as a management team will work hard to keep every player possible. There will be changes to our backroom team and I will confirm these changes in the next couple of weeks."
