Top Ulster trainer Martin McElkennon has turned down the opportunity to join Rory Gallagher's new look Donegal management set-up.

The Belfast Telegraph reports that the Ballygawley man rejected an invitation from Gallagher due to the amount of travel that it would involve.

McElkennon boasts an impressive inter-county curriculum vitae with Tyrone, Derry, Fermanagh, Cavan, Monaghan and Meath and is widely recognised as one of the most innovative coaches in gaelic football.

Gallagher is currently finalising his backroom team and Gary McDaid is on board as a selector.

The All-Ireland finalists are due to resume collective training next weekend ahead of their McKenna Cup opener against Derry.
