O'Brien linked to Westmeath job

Former St Brigid's supremo Noel O'Brien is believed to be a late candidate for the Westmeath senior football manager's job.

O'Brien was in charge of Offaly side Ferbane this year, and now is the latest name to be linked to the Westmeath role.

Last week, the six-man selection committee put in place to select a replacement for Paul Bealin, had their recommendation of Peter Leahy turned down by club delegates.

Former Westmeath footballer and selector John 'Jack' Cooney was then installed as favourite to get the job, but now the emergence of O'Brien as a candidate has saw it become a two-horse race.

The selection committee are due to meet again tonight (Wednesday) and they are set to put their preferred candidate forward.

O'Brien managed Athlone in 2013, but it has been with his native club St Brigid's where he has had the most success, winning two Connacht titles and guiding the club to the 2011 All-Ireland club final where they were beaten by Crossmaglen.
