Moffatt, John

July 11, 2006
The late John Moffatt A former footballer and hurler with Lisnaskea Emmets GAC, John Moffatt (43), who lived at Main Street in the town, died in the Royal Victoria Hospital from serious injuries he sustained in a fall where he lived. He was the father of 18-year-old, Martin and was a son of Kenny and Mary Moffatt, Drumhaw, Lisnaskea and a brother of twins, Kenny and Katie, Eileen, Elaine and Raymond. His Godfather was the late Frank Maguire, MP. News of his death, coming so soon after the recent tragic deaths of six other local young people, further saddened the community. He was from a well-known sporting family, his father having played in goals for Lisnaskea Emmets, a role which John was to fill with distinction. However, it was through his management of underage hurling teams within the club, leading to county minor managership that he found true fulfilment. The fight of a group of enthusiastic young hurlers around him, waiting at the Diamond in Lisnaskea for the bus to bring them to matches had become a familiar scene until recent years. John was a past pupil of the local St Ronan's Primary School and St Comhghall's Secondary School. From there, he took up employment in the local Adria factory and remained there until it closed a few years ago. From that until recently, John was mostly unemployed, although he did get regular placements with Conservation Volunteers where he was highly regarded and liked. His sister, Eileen said he would be particularly missed by his parents and by his sister, Katie who has physical disabilities: John never did anybody any harm. Any time Katie was ill, or there was any problem within the family, he would stay home to allow the others get on with their lives. He was very close to Katie, and also his nephews and nieces. Come Christmas time, he would always have envelopes for them". Eileen also recalled how John always prepared and cooked the Christmas turkey for the family get-together in their parents' home in Drumhaw, and said this too reflected someone with a very generous nature. In addition to his son, Martin and his parents, Kenny and Mary, John is further survived by his brothers, Kenny (Kathy) and Raymond (Patricia), and his sister, Katie, Eileen (Alec) Porter, and Elaine (Maurice) Irvinestown.
