The Late Eamonn Maguire, Derrygonnelly
The entire community of Derrygonnelly was shocked at the death of one of its favourite sons, Eamonn Maguire. The Derrygonnelly man, aged 85 years, who lived for his community died in the Erne Hospital in Enniskillen.
Born and bred in his home village, he was the son of Charles and Mary Maguire of Main Street.
After attending local primary school he continued his education at Blackrock College in Dublin.
On finishing his education he went to work in the family business in main street. The family owned a thriving grocery shop, as well as a shoe and boot shop.
Eamonn was a keen footballer of Derrygonnelly Harps, his home club, all his life.
The club formed in 1924 and Eamonn had won his place in the minor team by 1937 as a 16 year old. He also played for Fermanagh Minors before progressing to the Harps senior team.
Eamonn, a fast and nippy half forward, progressed onto the Fermanagh Junior team where he established his place and played for many years.
In the early 1950s he became Chairman of Derrygonnelly Harps and remained in the position for 25 years.
He contributed his whole life to the club and was a keen supporter and administrator right up until his death.
He was also a member of the Derrygonnelly District Community Enterprise and very much involved in the Pioneer movement, as well as the amateur dramatic society.
He is survived by his wife Rita and three daughters Patricia, Geraldine and Carmel and one son Charles.
