The Late Hugh O'Connor
A well-respected figure in both local and Warwickshire GAA circles, Hugh O'Connor passed away on May 23rd at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Selly Oak, Birmingham, after a short illness.
Born on St Patrick's Day 1944 along with his twin brother John, he was one of nine children of Eddie and Eileen O'Connor of Cavanacross.
Hugh received his education in Mullanskea Primary School and the Enniskillen Technical College. After serving his apprenticeship as a bricklayer, he sought employment and moved to Birmingham in September 1964, where he was to spend the rest of his days.
He married Anne Mallon from Ballygawley, and the couple had two children, Nigel and Sandra, both of whom now live in Enniskillen.
Working in construction, Hugh had a dedication to his work and a level of expertise that saw him become very successful. He finished his career with several years of being in charge of the building of vast stores for the retailers Aldi.
It was through his love of sport that he made many friends for life. He played football and hurling with the famous Sean McDermott's club, as well as enjoying soccer and golf.
As both a player and mentor with the club, he picked up numerous honours, and some of the highlights of his life were the trips home to Ireland to take part in tournaments. In 2000, they came and played in a competition in Fermanagh, beating Irvinestown in the semi-final, before losing to Enniskillen Gaels in the final.
His close links to home were always maintained through the years, and he would frequently fly home to see his beloved Fermanagh in action.
Golf trips to sunnier climes were also an annual event that he would never miss, along with his brothers and relations.
After being diagnosed with cancer in February, Hugh fought a tough battle in hospital and at home and was cared for by his partner Teresa Ravenall, and his children.
After his death, a Mass was held at Church of Holy Souls, Alcocks Green, Birmingham. His remains were brought home the following day for Requiem Mass at Cradien Chapel, and burial in Breandrum Cemetery.
He is survived by partner Teresa his son Nigel (Samantha) and daughter Sandra. He also enjoyed many happy times with his grand-daughters Cailtlin, Georgina, Diairine, Cara Mae and Hannah.
Month's mind mass will be celebrated at Cradien this Friday at 7pm.
