The Late Brother William Frank Malone The death took place of Brother Frank Malone in St. Patrick's Nursing Home in Baldoyle. The funeral mass was celebrated by Very Rev. Canon Sean Cotter PP, Charleville, assisted by Very Rev. Dan McCarthy P.E. Chaplain to St. Patrick's. The interment took place in Blessed Edmund Rice Cemetery in Baldoyle. The homily at the Mass was delivered by Brother Frank Keane, Neurologist of the European Province of the Christian Brothers and in it he outlined Br. Frank Malone's life as a Christian Brother and the contribution he made to Irish Education, to Gaelic Games and to the Church over the past sixty years. The text of the homily follows. Brother William Frank Malone (Homily at Funeral Mass, Friday, October 19, 2007, by Br. Frank Keane, European Province Neurologist of the Christian Brothers). Frank was born in Dublin in the year of the Congress 1932. He attended CBS Crumlin and James' St. Joseph's Marino to join the Christian Brothers. After his Novitiate Year in St. Helen's he trained as a Primary Teacher in Colaiste Mhuire, Marino. He later graduated with an Honours Degree and Higher Diploma in Education from University College Cork. He taught in many schools in Leinster and in Munster and was Principal in Cashel, Clonmel, Lismore, Athy and in Doon. In his early days of teaching in Nenagh, his love for music led him to found a Flageolet Band and in later years he was delighted when he was requested to take charge of the CBS Sexton Street, Limerick Pipe Band. He brought the band to many parts of this country and indeed to continental Europe. He paid a keen interest in the Irish language and was already ready and willing to speak it, when opportunities arose. For a young man from Baile Atha Cliath, he displayed a remarkable interest in, and knowledge of hurling, of both the skills of the game and of the training of hurling teams. He had wonderful successes with the school teams in North Monastery, in Cashel (reaching the final of the Harty Cup) in Kilkenny CBS and in Arklow. He felt privileged and very proud, when he became chairman of Colaisti na Mumhan. Even when he had retired from school, his skill and great interest in the game was recognised by Charleville GAA Club. In retirement Frank was also willing to share his school experiences and served on many Boards of Management. Frank also played a bit of golf and eagerly looked forward to the annual holiday in Courtown and in recent years he was always present at the Brothers' Golf outing in the Heath. He won the individual Trophy in the early nineties. Frank had great time for people and could make conversation easily and kept up these friendships over the years. His post at Christmas (both incoming and outgoing) was enormous. He was very faithful in attending funerals of Brothers, of his many friends and relations of friends, distance meant nothing to Frank, where funerals were concerned. Frank was also a person who had a great love of and regard for his own family members, sisters, nephews and nieces. He visited when he could and was very proud of their achievements and kept many, many photos of family members and of family occasions. In school Frank was a diligent teacher of Irish, the sciences, music and religion and in the religion classes he successed in imparting to the students a great love and appreciation of the Eucharist and of Our Lady. During his final illness, he was very lucky to have been in Charleville, where he was cared for the CBS housekeeper Ellen Deady. Since coming to Baldoyle in March 2004, he was extremely well looked after by the matron, nursing staff, the doctor and carers and also in Beaumount Hospital. Br. Frank lived a very full life as a loyal follower of Blessed Edmund Rice and touched the lives of so many, many people, Brothers, clergy, students, teaching staff, hurlers, parents of students, and his own family members. The Lord is now giving him a huge céad míle fáilte and saying "well done good and faithful servant". Go bhfeighe sé suaimhneas agus síocháin I dteannta Dé agus go bhfaighe sé leaba iontach I measc na Naomh. Ní bheigh a leithéid arís ann. Br. Frank was in poor health for some time and he passed away peacefully on Wednesday October 17. He is survived by his brothers Paddy (Kilshane Road, Dublin), Frank (Coventry, England), in-laws, nephews, nieces, grand-nephews and grandnieces, by his Brothers in Religion and by a very wide circle of friends. Go bhfaighe sé sólás I measc na naomh. Courtesy of the Limerick Leader 5th November 2007
