CHAMPIONSHIP SUCCESS well done to the our latest Championship winners, while the weather was terrible, the hurling was top drawer and it was brilliant to see the lads bring home the Cup, and the celebrations was superb in the club after. Well done to PJ Finnerty, Christy Boylan, Paul Kyne, Kevin O’Tooleand all the Junior team, a big thanks also to Dermot English who helped throughout the year and on the day of the final. It was a good day on the Sunday as well with our Senior 1 Camogie team having a tough and hard fought game to secure a Senior Championship Semi Final, our Minor A footballers also recorded a good away win in the deciding fixture and have secured a Qtr-final spot. Our Minor Ladies footballers while not playing this weekend, due to other results are not confirmed for a semi-final spot and await confirmation of opponents. The men’s Minor B footballers did lose, but depending on other results may have qualified from group. Jnr 3 Camogie drew and Jnr 4 Camogie won well away to Peregrines in a top of the table clash and are now through to Semi-Finals also. Lots of match reports below.

'Staidéar agus Spórt' 2019.   Sarsfields S+S educational initiative for the Club's 5th and 6th Years, went well last Monday 30th September. We are grateful to Paul Casey and Emer Keenan for their excellent presentations as Keynote Speakers. The student player attendees drawn from the four code Minor and U16 panels, really engaged with the twenty seven General Speakers, with a noticeable interactive buzz throughout the evening. Thanks to the loyal group of speakers for their time, commitment and enthusiastic engagement towards the amiable young players who will soon be moving into the Club's adult ranks. Thanks to the Floor observers, the Lucan Healthy Clubs representatives, the respective Team Managements, the Steering Committee and anyone who helped in any way to encourage our young players to 'Keep On Keeping On'.

Juvenile Ladies Football

Our U8 girls football played at home to Castleknock on Sunday morning. We had forty girls all eager to play, our biggest number for an U8 game so far. The girls played very well. They all tried hard to put into practice all they had been learning at their training sessions, while having great fun and enjoying being part of a team. We had four fantastic Lucan Sarsfields girls as referees. They were great at showing the girls what they were making mistakes at, and complementing them when they got things right. 

Adult Hurling Report

A great weekend for adult hurling in the club with our Junior B team winning the Dublin Junior D Championship. It’s four years since we last captured a championship in any of the adult grades so great to see some silverware return to the Club and it was duly celebrated in style on Saturday night. Well done to the panel of players and the management team of PJ Finnerty, Christy Boylan, Paul Kyne and Kevin O’Toole. See match report below. The Junior Bs are in action again on Tuesday night when they host Cuala in a league promotion playoff. Throw in 7.30 pm at 12th Lock. Next Sunday our Minor Bs are at home to St Vincent’s in the championship quarterfinal with an 11am start.

Junior D Championship Final

Lucan Sarsfields 3-15. Wild Geese 4-7.

It was a day for ducks, but not for geese, as Lucan captured the title at a rain sodden O’Toole Park. Lucan got off to a flying start and had 1-5 on the board before Wild Geese got their first score in the 10th minute. The early Lucan goal came from Killian Boylan who cut through and fired low to the corner of the net. Boylan also contributed 2 points in the opening scoring burst, as did Evan Lombard, after the opening score came from Alan Murphy.  Despite Lucan’s early dominance, two goals in the space of five minutes brought Wild Geese back into the game and the scoreline read 1-6 to 2-1 after 15 minutes. In the 19th minute, Alan Murphy cut through the Geese defence and fired a low shot towards goal, where Aidan Glover was lurking and managed to get a boot to the sliotar and help it on its way to the net. Murphy again and then Ciaran Keane followed up with good scores from play as Lucan reasserted their dominance. However the Geese struck again with their third goal the 30th minute and reduced the deficit to 4 at half time, 2-8 to 3-1. The rain continued to pour down as play commenced for the second half. Lucan made some alterations in the backs to stem the flow of goals and they largely worked with Dylan Kelly and Peter Fagan lording the central positions in the second half. Boylan got the scoreboard moving again with a well taken point at the start of the half. Wild Geese however responded again and got their fourth goal in the 34th minute. Ciaran Keane had a pointed free in response but then 3 consecutive points from Geese had the sides level after 42 minutes. Lucan replied again with two frees from Keane but the Geese responded once more and levelled again in the 48th minute. With 10 minutes remaining the teams were still level and the tension was building in the large partisan crowd. Keane edged Lucan ahead with a pointed free in the 51st minute. Then the vital score came in the 54th minute when Aidan Glover picked up a breaking ball and raced towards goal, and finished expertly off his left side to give Lucan a 4 point lead coming down the home stretch. Geese reduced the deficit to 3 before Alan Murphy pointed again in the 61st minute and Ciaran Keane got the final score with a point in the 64th minute. The final whistle blew soon after and Lucan were champions! Captain James Cavanagh collected the cup for the victorious Lucan team. This was a great team performance in very difficult conditions. Killian Boylan had a super game scoring 1-3 from play and setting up a number of scores. Alan Murphy (0-3), Evan Lombard  (0-2) and Aidan Glover (2-0), were also very effective in the forward line while Ciaran Keane (0-7, 0-5f) was very reliable from placed balls on a difficult day for free taking. His accuracy ultimately proved the difference between the sides as Geese struggled to convert their chances from placed balls. Shane Donohue did some great hurling in midfield while in defence Dylan Kelly was excellent throughout and probably edged the man of the match accolade, with Peter Fagan also having an excellent hour winning some great ball at vital stages.  Luke Finnerty in goals made a couple of vital saves and his puckouts provided a great platform for the forwards.
All of the Lucan players and panel can be proud of their contribution to this success, not just on final day, but through the long successful championship campaign also.

Senior 1 Camogie Championship 2019

Lucan Sarsfields had a comprehensive, though hard-fought win, over Na Fianna in the Quarter Final of the Senior 1 Camogie Championship at the 12th Lock on Sunday, 6th October.

Sarsfields got off to a dream start with a goal from Chloe O’Connor within two minutes following an excellent sideline strike from Ali Twomey. Assisted by a strong wind, however, and with good teamwork throughout and superb interplay from intercounty stars Eve O’Brien, Róisín Baker and Orla Grey, Na Fianna edged in front. Under sustained pressure the Sarsfields defence conceded a number of frees, five of which were converted by the unerring Niamh Rock to add to her point from play and three from her team mates. Sarsfields kept in touch with points from Laura Quinn and Orla Beagan and two from frees by Aoife McKearney.

The Halftime Score:   Sarsfields   1 – 4                      Na Fianna   0 – 9.

On resumption the sides traded points but then Sarsfields hit a purple patch. An inspired switch by Bainisteoir, Dave Keenan, of Ali Twomey and Orla Beagan reaped immediate dividend and Sarsfields scored five points without reply, with three from Ali Twomey and one each from Orla Beagan and Aoife McKearney with some defence splitting passes from Jess McClelland and Chloe O’Connor. The sides again traded points before Sarsfields were awarded a penalty which was neatly dispatched for a goal by Orla Beagan. The home side were now in control and the defence, ably led by Emma Flanagan, was resolute. Great defending by Avril Quinn, Aoife Mahon and Emma O’Flynn and excellent goalkeeping by Amy Gorman withstood a determined onslaught from Na Fianna. Sarsfields stalwarts Michelle Kelly and Rachel Leonard helped to limit the Na Fianna attack to only one further point. The home side tacked on four extra points through Aoife McKearney (2), Laura Quinn and substitute Laura O’Mahony. The Sarsfields midfield of “evergreen” Audrey Murtagh and Claire Rigney provided an excellent link throughout and the other substitutes Aoife Byrne and Siofra Byrne contributed greatly to a merited win.

Juvenile Football Report

A few of our juvenile football teams in action again this weekend as they are now coming to the end of their leagues.

Lucan Sarsfields Juvenile Football Report: 

U.12 Football Lucan Sarsfields 3 

Date & Time: 5 October  2019 @  11 a.m.

Venue: St. Catherine’s Park  (moved from St. Anne’s Park, Pitch 12) 

Opposition: Naomh Barrog 2.

Competition: U.12 Football League, Division 11.

Final Score: Lucan Sarsfields 5-6, Naomh Barrog 3-2

Match Report:

This match was originally pencilled in as an away fixture for the 12th Lock boys but St. Anne’s Park  failed yesterday’s pitch inspection! No such issues with St.Catherine’s park and Naomh Barrog accepted the trip to the Liffeyside to complete this penultimate football fixture in the league for the Lucan u12s C team. The conditions for the match were good relatively warm with little wind. Captain for the day was Darragh Walsh  From the throw-in this Lucan team attacked with skill and pace. The Northsiders had difficulty escaping the stranglehold Lucan had them in. The homeside’s forwards made it difficult for the opposition goalie and backs. Through skill and some luck Naomh Barrog kept Lucan out until the inevitable happened. Naomh Barrog eventually broke out of their half and looped a ball over the Lucan  goalkeepers fingertips and into the net. This setback, however, did not phase the Lucan footballers and they worked the ball up the field and got the scoreboard ticking. Again they pressed really hard on the Naomh Barrog restarts and dominating possession for the rest of the half while adding a couple of goals and points. At the interval Lucan were leading by 4 points.

After the restart Naomh Barrog began to gain the upper hand on their opposition to such an extent that they drew level by the mid-point of the half. It was at this stage that the Sarsfields boys re exerted their authority on the game and blitzed their opposition out scoring them by 3 goals and 2 points to no score. At the end of this sporting encounter Naomh Barrog and Lucan’s players met in midfield and shook hands, a fitting end to the game refereed well by Oisín from Round Towers GAA.

Lucan 5-7 St. Peregrines 2-7

A slow start by Lucan allowed Peregrines to fire over the first couple of scores but two well taken goals by Cillian Buttner and another by Cian Waterhouse put Lucan ahead going in at half time. The three goals knocked the opposition’s confidence and they found it hard to catch the deficit. The second half was evenly enough matched and Lucan’s performance was better. The Lucan defence did well with Olan Sullivan, Patrick Cosgrove and Adam McMahon giving solid performances on the half back line. Conor Long and Michael Casey also kept the full back line tight with Joshua saving a well taken penalty in the second half. The forwards done well and took most of their chances. All in all a very workmanlike performance by this team who are competing very well in this league.

U12 Div 1 football: 

Na Fianna v Lucan, St Vincents School 

Na Fianna 4-08 Lucan 5-10 

Lucan boys had to dig deep to pull out a hard fought win in a very competitive match this Saturday morning.  After a slow start Lucan found themselves 2-5 to 0-1 down after 10 mins, with a strong Na Fianna forward line posing Lucan some problems. 

Lucan regrouped with a few positional switches and began to take control but were finding it very difficult to get scores against a Na Fianna team defending in numbers on a very tight pitch.  Patrick O Connor & Michael o Brien managed a few good points each before 2 goals from P O Connor left Lucan just 2 behind at half time 2-6 to 2-4.  

Lucan looked to have started the second half in control but conceded another sloppy goal when Na Fianna finished from a long ball broken down in the square. Lucan responded well with some great team play and scores including a spectacular left footed point from the side line by D Taaffe. A goal by Karl Quinn put Lucan 5 up and in control but Na Fianna responded with another goal to reduce the gap to 2 points and leave the game in the balance approaching the last 10 mins.

Na Fianna added a point but another swift Lucan attack resulted in Callum Reilly latching onto a breaking ball to sweep in a great goal with a first time ground strike giving Lucan some breathing space.

Na Fianna replied with a point before D Taaffe broke from midfield beating a few defenders before he buried the ball in the net for a great goal to put Lucan 6 up.

Na Fianna responded with another point but Lucan held on for a good win on a final score Lucan 5-10 Na Fianna 4-8.

We wish Gavin Lynch a speedy recovery from his recent injury.

Good performance from the full team with an impressive effort to fight back having gone behind.  Some very good passages of play and excellent scores but also lots to work on.

In the U-13 League Division 5, Lucan overcame Castleknock on a score line of 8-9 to 2-10. This Lucan team are competing very well in this league.

In the U-13 Football League Division 8, Lucan lost out to Croi Na Naofa by 2-17 to 2-07. This team have performed very well in this league and just missed out on the league by a narrow margin. Well done to the team and management.

The U14A footballers travelled the short journey to Porterstown to take on Castleknock on Saturday last. The match was played in torrential rain and underfoot conditions proved very difficult for both sides. Points were hard to come by but first half goals from Dara Walsh and Cillian Whelan (2) as well as two well taken pints by Adam Burns helped Lucan into a 6 point lead at half-time, 3-02 to 1-02. The second half saw Castleknock claw their way back into the match with a number of unanswered points and they took the lead with 10 minutes remaining with the aid of a penalty. However, great battling qualities saw Sarsfields finished strongly and a second goal from Dara Walsh and another from Adam Rock saw them through on a final score-line of 5-05 to 2-09.

In the U-14 Football league Division 5, Lucan lost out to Kilmacud by 5-7 to 1-5.

In the U-14 Football League Division 10 Top 4, Lucan lost out to O Dwyers in a close match by 5-07 to 4-02.

On Sunday in the U-15 Division 1 league, Lucan lost out to Kilmacud Crokes on a score line of 0-12 to 0-06.
