Dublin's Stephen Cluxton punches the ball past Paul Geaney of Kerry

Vinnie Murphy says Stephen Cluxton has to be rewarded with the Footballer of the Year award.

The influential Dublin goalkeeper was outstanding again this season as he captained his county to All-Ireland glory for the sixth time. Writing in his column in The Irish Daily Star, former Dubs attacker Murphy points out that the game-changing No.1 should be honoured accordingly:

“It is incredible that easily the most influential footballer in decades has never won the ultimate individual award. That has to change this year. Cluxton is the Footballer of the Year. No question.

“The worry that all Dublin fans have is that he was bidding farewell on Saturday night. He did a lap of honour with his nephew and lingered with fans in the Croke Park stands for selfies and autographs. I really hope he stays on as Cluxton is irreplaceable.”
