Delvin, John

July 05, 2006
The late John Delvin Mr John Delvin, of 154 Castlewellan Road, Kilcoo, passed away peacefully on 14 June, 2006 in Daisy Hill Hospital, Newry. John, born at the family home in Letallion on 28 March 1932, was the oldest son of Michael and Mary Delvin. He attended Cabra Primary School but on leaving school he began working on the family farm, which became his occupation in life. John married in May on 25 June 1959, and they would have celebrated 47 years of marriage this year. Following their wedding they settled in Letallion, close to John's birthplace, and it was here they raised their two daughters, Maureen and Mairead, and four sons, Michael, Sean, Colm and Brian. John was an honourable and loving husband and worked hard on the farm to provide for his family. He was a friend and good neighbour to many folk and this was evident by the huge attendance at his wake and funeral. Farming cattle and crops of potatoes were his bread and butter, duties he performed with such perfection alongside his brother Seamus, with the assistance of his four sons. John was a lifelong member of Kilcoo Owen Roe GAA club and a much respected trustee of the club. His love for Gaelic football as a Kilcoo man was obvious as he always proudly displayed his Division One league medal of 1957. John was honoured to enter in to the Kilcoo GAC Hall of Fame in 2005, and was a proud man when he met the GAA president at the club's centenary celebrations in January 2006. Alcohol never passed through his lips; a fact borne out by the Gold Pioneer Pin, which always remained displayed on the breast of his jacket. John enjoyed going to the dance and ceilis with his wife May, until diabetes started to take a grip on him. As his health deteriorated, he remained completely dignified and was content just to enjoy the simple surroundings of his home and family. His kind and friendly presence will be a great loss, not only to his loving wife May, six children and 20 grandchildren, but also to the entire family circle and wider community. John is also survived by his brother Seamus (Kilcoo), sisters Annie Delvin (Kilcoo) and May Travers (Cabra), sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephew and nieces. His funeral took place at St Malachy's Church, Kilcoo on Friday 16 June, 2006 and officiating were Fr Denis McKinlay, Parish Priest, with the assistance of Fr Malachy Conlon (Kilkerley, Co Louth). A fitting tribute to John was given at the Funeral Mass by his son Brian. Internment took place in the adjoining cemetery, with wreaths received from family and friends. Messers P Doran, Hilltown diligently carried out the funeral arrangements. Courtesy of the Mourne Observer 5 July 2006
