Mr Bernard McCann The death of Bernard (Barney) McCann, Dree, Dromara, has occasioned much sadness and sorrow among his family, many friends and neighbours. Aged 77, he passed away suddenly in the Royal Victoria Hospital on Friday 21 October. Barney is survived by his wife Julia, son Declan, daughter Roisin (Ballymartin), son-in-law Sean Rogers, granddaughter Niamh, sisters Alice Lundy, (Dromara); and Rita Doyle (Annaclone); also brothers-in-law, sister-in-law, nephews, nieces and other relatives. Barney farmed all his life in the Dromara area and was very popular with all his neighbours. He always had plenty of time to stop and have a chat about local happenings. He was very interested in soccer and Gaelic football and was an avid supporter of the local Gaelic teams and of the Down Gaelic team. He won a Junior Championship medal with Dromara in 1951, and remained a loyal and generous supporter all his life. Barney was a devoted member of St Michael's Parish, Finnis, and he attended and supported many parish activities. The funeral service was held in St Michael's Church on Sunday 23 October with Fr Brian Brown PP, Magheralin, officiating, assisted by Fr Clement McManus CSSR, a friend of the family. Interment followed in the local cemetery. The large number of people, from all denominations, who attended Barney's Funeral Mass bore testimony to the high esteem in which he was held. May he rest in peace. Courtesy of The Mourne Observer 23 November 2005
