The Late Leigh Keenan
The people of Mayobridge community were deeply shocked and saddened by the death of Mr Leigh Keenan, a 27 year old man, who died tragically on 17 May following an accident while working in Brooklyn, New York.
Leigh, a former pupil of St Patrick's Primary School, Mayobridge, and St Colman's College, Newry, was also a keen GAA supporter and played for Mayobridge Minor team.
Leigh attended the Training Centre in Newry where he developed an interest in bricklaying and later expanded his skills and expertise while working for Madden's Building Contractors, Newry.
At the age of 20, he travelled to New York and had been living and working in the Queen's borough for the past seven years.
Leigh quickly became accustomed to the lifestyle and was very popular among the Irish community living in New York.
During his stay in America, Leigh also took time out to tour Australia. While living away from home he remained very loyal to his family, friends and work colleagues through weekly phone calls and always welcomed those who came to visit him.
Following Leigh's death, the Irish community in New York organised a memorial service on 19 May in St Sebastian's Church in Woodside, Queen's. A funeral mass later took place on 22 May in Mary Queen of Peace, Warrenpoint.
Leigh will always be remembered and sadly missed by his parents Oliver and Annie, Mayo Road, Mayobridge, his sister Olivia and entire family circle. He will also be missed by his friends, work colleagues and everyone else who knew him.
May he soul rest in peace.
