Aughlisnafin club notes

April 24, 2017

Baile an Locha minors made it three wins from three games with an excellent victory away to Castlewellan to go two points clear at the top of the league. The first half was a closely contested affair with Castlewellan momentarily taking the lead after a two goal salvo ten minutes before half time but a goal from Shea Croskery gave the Loch a three point advantage at the short whistle. Noade (2), Flanagan (2), Gilmore (2), Burns and Croskery getting the points for the Loch in the first half. Half time Castlewellan 2-02 Baile an Locha 1-08.

In the second half Castlwellan scored a point immediately after the re-start to reduce their deficit to just two points but for the remainder of the game the Loch dominated the possession stakes and the scoreboard whilst an uncompromising rearguard of McPolin, McMullan, Kelly, McCullough and Magorrian restricted the 'Town to just three points for the remainder of the game. Loch keeper Pearse McCann and his second half replacement Faelan Murphy both saving well from the Town forwards when called upon. Shea Croskery bagged another two goals to complete a superb hat-trick and tagged on a second point from play. Gilmore added a superb 1-3 with Ruairi Quinn also finding the net after Gilmore turned provider. Caolan Burns hit another 0-2 and substitute Barry Rogan got the final point of the Loch's superb second half return of 4-07. Final score Castlewellan 2-06 Baile an Locha 5-15. Next game is at home to St Paul's.

*The U16s maintained their winning start to the season after seeing off a spirited Darragh Cross side to go joint top of the East Down A division. Shea Croskery took his impressive form for the minors into this game which saw him top score with 2-08, with just three points coming from free kicks. Midfielder Trae Crawford kept up his rich veing of scoring form with another 1-01 from play with inside forward Cathal Murphy scoring 0-04. Morgan Croskery continues to impress in nets with Rory Walsh also catching the eye at wing half back. Final score Darragh Cross 1-09 Aughlisnafin 3-13. Next up is a free scoring Loughinisland side who will provide the 'Fin with their toughest test so far.

*The U12's were away to St John's on Sunday morning. With ample numbers on both sides on the day it was agreed to play the game as 13 aside to ensure every player got adequate game time and what a game that followed. Harry Keenan 'I had Nutella for breakfast' helped himself to four goals and a point. Dualta Pickering scored 2-01 and Calum Lyttle also on target with 1-01. Despite a total return of 7-03 it just fell short of St John's 4-15 return by three points, a mere kick of the ball. But what a performance from every single player involved. There is real progress and with ten of the fifteen players still involved at this grade next season it augers well for the future. Next game is at home to Kilclief.

*The club had two teams for the second East Down Go Games blitz in a row and thanks to all the players and parents for their committment to these very important games for development. The games were hosted by Ardglass GAC and thanks to them for doing so.

The U10.5 team were R McCann, C O'Hare, J Steen, J Dornan, M Flanagan, D Steen, O Murray, S Croskery, R Croskery, C Flanagan. They had strong performances against Ardglass, Kilclief, Carryduff and Loughinisland with great teamwork and score taking a prominent feature throughout all the games.

The U8.5 team were R Quinn, D Steen, C Flanagan, J Lenaghan, D Steele, R Murphy, S OHare, M Murphy, A Croskery, E Croskery. With only Kilclief and Carryduff fielding at this grade on the day the 'fin played both opposition teams twice. Again there were very strong performances, with 7 year old twins Eoin and Anna Croskery and 6 year old Shea O'Hare doing exceptionally well, not forgetting a brief cameo from 5 year old Ronan Murphy. Well done all.

Both teams were superb throughout with very strong performances in every match. The work on the training field and in the case of the U10.5s the hard games at U12s are really standing to them.

*The club were represented by Kevin McComiskey, Anthony Quinn, Niall Dornan and Conor Walsh at the Down GAA Activities Day in Croke Park last Saturday.
