U13 Ladies County Development Team

Down v Monaghan

What a titanic battle on Saturday in St Mellans Truagh for the U13 girls against a traditionally strong ladies football county, Monaghan, who won this competition at U13s last year. After the Mourne girls stormed into a 1-5 to 0-1 lead after 12 mins, Monaghan then came into the game and banged in a number of goals in a purple patch for them leaving the score 5-4 to 1-6 at half time and Down were glad to see the break to steady the ship.
We were then hit hard with the losses of our influential captain Jenna McMahon and wing half forward Caoimhe McKeown at half time. However, after an early point for Monaghan at start of the second half, Down rallied and upped their fight and determination. With the girls that came on in very hot conditions, Down opened up Monaghan and for the next 25 mins hemmed Monaghan in rattling in 3-3 to take a 1 point lead with 5 mins left. Our defence and midfield was working even harder now and our forward line was causing the home side major problems in that period and Nora Maguire in nets was clearing her lines well.
However, the exertions of the comeback took its toll on the girls in the warm conditions and Monaghan got two goals in last few minutes, one of them fortuitous to get them over the line on a final score of 7-7 to 4-10. A big well done to all the girls and apologies to any girl who did not get game time today. Thanks also for the support today from anyone who came along and of course to our taxi drivers from Bredagh and Carryduff! This journey is a marathon not a sprint and the girls are showing real progress in the space of just two months. #onwardsandupwards

Training continues next Saturday 1st April in preparation for Donegal U13s at home on Saturday 8th April.

Many thanks to all the parents who made the long trip to support all 4 teams

U14 UPDATE

The U14 team played two highly competitive games against the Down U13 Squad (Details above) and against a strong Carryduff u15/u16 team. The performances from all the girls were excellent and attention now turns to the Ulster Blitz in Cookstown next weekend. Many thanks to Carryduff for providing the opposition and to Rowan Lyons for refereeing the game
