Burns: we are massive underdogs

Eamonn Burns has reflected on one of Down's most famous wins in the Ulster SFC ahead of Sunday week's showdown with Monaghan.

Burns was a part of the side which shocked then All-Ireland champions Derry back in 1994 before going on to secure their own Sam Maguire triumph, and the Mourne County boss is hoping for a similar sort of upset against the Ulster champions in Clones.

"It is what it is," Burns told The Irish News this week. "We are massive underdogs, but there's always an exception in Down that we can win games, that on any given Sunday they can perform, regardless of who they (the opposition) are.

"If you think back to '94 and my own playing career, we went to Celtic Park to play Derry and nobody thought Down was coming out of Celtic Park.

"The only people who thought that were the panel of players going to Derry that afternoon, but we knew we had a chance.

"It is a big task going to Clones, facing the Ulster champions, but we have a chance."

Team captain Kevin McKernan and Benny McArdle have recently returned to the set-up after overcoming injuries endured during the league campaign which saw Down relegated back to Division Two.
