Morgan, Arthur

January 07, 2009
A guard of honour was formed by Kilcoo GAC at the funeral of Mr Arthur Morgan last month. Boys and girls from U10 level up to Senior, were represented and provided a fitting farewell to one of Kilcoo's true gentlemen. A devoted family man, Arthur's beloved wife Nora passed away 44 years ago and he was left to raise their 10 children with the help of his extended family. During the Fifties, Sixties and Seventies, he was sexton to St Malachy's Church. He was a dilligent worker who took great pride in the upkeep of the church, Parochial House and church grounds, as well as the Parochial Hall. He also worked as caretaker of St Malachy's Primary School and carried out school patrol duties. Arthur was often seen rushing from job to job, especially at midday, to ring the Angelus Bell, which was always rung on time. His great love to Gaelic games had a profound effect on his life. Although small in stature, he was quite capable of throwing his weight around when playing as a forward for Kilcoo. When his playing days were over, he involved himself in the running of the club as treasurer and chairman. In later years the club elected him president, an honour he was delighted to accept, and carried out his duties with great dignity. He was also a trustee of the club. Arthur attended all matches involving Kilcoo teams from U10s to Seniors. His proudest moment ws witnessing the U16s win the 1996 Championships and the Minor Championship two years later. His dream was to see Kilcoo win a Senior Championship Sadly that was not to be, but perhaps with Arthur's support from above, this could yet come about. Certainly it was fitting that the club won the Division One a few days after his death. With his vast knowledge of Kilcoo, Arthur was often consulted on various topics from football to burial plots in the local cemetery. He is survived by his sister, Sr Bonaventure, sons Arthur, Vincent, James, Colm, Patrick, Liam, Brendan and Michael, daughters Bridget and Rosemary, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The huge turnout for his funeral was testament to the esteem in which he was held. He will be sadly missed. May he rest in peace. Mourne Observer - 7th January 2009
