Donegal's Martin McElhinney chips in his goal against Tyrone in the McKenna Cup final

Martin McElhinney says the current Donegal squad is the strongest he’s played on.

The 2012 All-Ireland winner clipped over four points on Sunday as the rampant Ulster champions – shorn of their Gweedore contingent as well as the likes of Michael Murphy, Ryan McHugh, Patrick McBrearty, Frank McGlynn, Paddy McGrath, Leo McLoone and Eoghan ‘Ban’ Gallagher – powered past Down in the McKenna Cup.

“There’s loads of competition this year in fairness and it’s a very strong squad – probably as strong a squad as I have been involved in,” the St Michael’s clubman told The Irish Daily Mirror.

“There’s boys that can come in at any position. Nobody is set in stone so that’s why I think it’s the best squad yet and there’s still a lot of boys to come back in.

“There’s loads of opportunities there so it’s just a matter of putting your hands up there and taking it when you get a chance.”
