The Late Michael McFadden
The sudden death at his home in Derryreel Dunfanaghy on Tuesday the 21st of June of Michael McFadden, better known as Mickey Handsome, caused widespread sadness in the local community. Deceased was 78 and was a highly respected member of the local community in which he was a very active member up until the time of his death. He was Pre-deceased by his grandson Shaun.
A devoted family man, Mickey was known all over the North West and beyond as a cattle dealer, walking as far as Crolly Bridge with his father to deal in earlier years. In 1954 he became chairman of the local GAA Club and he was involved and held many positions with the St. Michael's club ever since. He was involved in starting the Bingo in Creelough in 1967 and later on when it moved to Dunfanaghy he was the Bingo Caller for the past 38 years, in the early 1990's he was made Club President, he also called the Bingo in Gortahork and he was also involved in a Lay capacity with Holy Cross Church Dunfanagh. His remains were removed to Letterkenny General Hospital for a post-mortem on Tuesday evening and the remains were removed to his late residence for waking.
The Celebrant at his Funeral Mass in Holy Cross Church Dunfanagh was Fr Paul Gallagher assisted by Fr John Dugsale his nephew, Fr Sean O'Gallachoir P.P. Gortahork, Fr Vincent Gallagher and Fr John McGlynn former P.P. Gortahork. The readings were read by his Grandchildren Sinead and John McFadden and the Prayers of the Faithful were read by Paul Kelly and Patricia Atkins. Music and singing were provided by the Holy Cross Choir. Tributes were paid to Mickey by Fr Sean O'Gallachoir and by his son in law Joe Langan. A guard of Honour was formed by members of St Michael's GAA Club on the way to the Graveyard. Fr Sean O'Gallachoir and Fr Dugdale Officiated at the graveside in Holy Cros Cemetery where Liam McElhinney Chairman of Club Naomh Michael also paid tribute to Mickey for his outstanding contribution to the Club over the years.
The sympathy of the community is extended to his wife Sally, son PJ and daughter in law Mary and grandchildren (Derryreel) to his daughter Mary Theresa and son in law Joe (Letterkenny). to his brother Barney (Derryreel), sisters Agnes (Dunfanaghy), Rose (Philadelphia) and Lena in England, to his nieces and nephews and to the entire family circle.
