January 09, 2014
Donegal GAA and the wider GAA community are mourning one of the grand old men of the Gaelic Football world Owen McCann, author and journalist. Owen, 83, was a native of Moville, but lived most of his life in Artane in Dublin. A gaelic journalist and author, he was also a former editor of 'Gaelic World magazine' the official GAA monthly magazine.
Among his well known and widely read books are 'The Shell Book of the McCarthy Cup', 'Greats of Gaelic Games,' 'Who's Who in Gaelic Games' and 'Recordmakers of Gaelic Games'.
He also, along with the late Sean Og O'Callaghan, co-wrote the Story of the Liam McCarthy Cup. Owen, along with Con McLaughlin, Tom Casserly and Pat Lally, was one of the founding members of the Moville GAA club back in the 1940s and before he moved to work and live in Dublin. He was a dedicated GAA and proud Donegal follower and in recent years never missed a big Donegal game in Croke Park. He died in Beaumont Hospital on Friday and was laid to rest on Saturday in Fingal Cemetery in Dublin. He was predeceased by his brother Jack and is survived by his brother Eddie, sister-in-law Ann, nieces Elaine and Colette, nephews John and Rory.
