Sweeney, John

September 05, 2013
Very deeply regretted was the recent death of John Sweeney of Griall who died in London. He was 75. He was a brother of Annie Finnegan, Fair Hill. A top footballer in his time, he was on that truly great Dungloe minor team of 1956 which won the Donegal MFC that year. They, along with the seniors who won the Senior League that year also, began a glorious 12 year period of mastery and dominance in the history of Dungloe GAA club right up to 1968.
When socialising and asked to sing, John's partypiece was always Slim Whitman's China Doll.
The obsequies took place in London, with the funeral Mass being celebrated there and interment taking place there also.
The deepest, heartfelt sympathy of the whole community is extended to John's wife, Rose, son, Paul, sister, Annie Finnegan, Fair Hill, and family, nephew, John, Fair Hill, other relatives and in-laws and many friends and former football colleagues. May his gentle soul rest in peace.
