Drummond, Sean
July 07, 2011
The funeral took place last week of Sean Drummond, a stalwart of the Credit Union movement in Derry who passed away on Sunday June 26th.
Mr Drummond from Marlborough Road, Derry was manager of Derry Credit Union for more than 30 years. He was also very well known in Donegal and was reared on the Rock in Ballyshannon. He played for the local Aodh Ruadh club and also played for Donegal at U21 and senior level.
He died peacefully at his home after a long illness.
Among those who paid tribute to Mr Drummond was Philomena Deery, president of Derry Credit Union who described him as a man of 'incredible talent.'
Sean was a gentleman in his manager, speech and his ability to show he cared," she said.
"No matter who he was speaking to, he had a very down to earth nature and treated everyone with dignity and equality.
"He had an incredible talent where he could make people feel at ease in his company.
"He was an excellent mentor to me during my time as Secretary and, more recently, as President. The wealth of knowledge about Credit Union that he as an individual possessed was unreal, something that only comes from years of experience.
"Sean was the inspiration and strength behind the growth and development of Derry Credit Union in his role as Manager, from January 1966 to July 1999, and in latter years as a volunteer. He has been greatly missed by all of us since his illness. Sean was loved and respected by all and his passing will leave an irreplaceable void in Derry Credit Union."
Gentleman
Also paying tribute to Mr Drummond was Foyle MP Mark Durkan who said: "Sean Drummond was an absolute gentleman. "He was conscientious and diligent in all his work with the Derry Credit Union and the wider Credit Union movement.
"As a Credit Union activist he was a great advocate for thrift but he had no fear of investment or ambition for his movement as witnessed by the strong development of Derry Credit Union.
"His modesty, discretion and common sense meant that everyone trusted his values and relied upon his sound judgement.
Sean Drummond loved this city and its people and served the community with a big heart."
Mr Drummond was buried in the City Cemetery following Requiem Mass at St Eugene's Cathedral in Derry last Tuesday (June 28th). He is survived by his wife Bebe, and children, Sean, Gavin, Mairead, Marc and Emmett.
