The late Eddie McGee

One of the most dedicated and hard working members of the Cloughaneely parish was laid to rest. Eddie McGee had devoted his life to the parish both as a footballer and a parish worker.
A teacher by profession, he taught for a short period in Carlow and Dublin but spent over 40 years in the area, firstly in Meenderry NS from 1946 to 1957; Principal in Magheroarty from 1957 to 1964 and finally as Principal of Gortahork from 1964 to 1987.
Born in 1922, he was full-back on the Donegal minor team of 1940 and played for Cloughaneely from 1938 until 1959, although he missed out on their junior triumphs at the start and end of his career. While in Carlow he played with O'Hanrahans and played senior football for Carlow and also played Lagan Cup for Donegal. He was an officer of the Cloughaneely club and the Western Board over an extended period.
But it was in his voluntary work in the area that he excelled - on committees like the Cloughaneely Development Association and St. Finian's Hall and he also ran the Irish College, Naomh Fionainn in the 1960's and 70's. Among the long list of voluntary organisations with which he was associated included the Mental Health Association, Alzheimer's, Irish Heart Foundation and Cancer Society.
He was also instrumental in the NW Housing Initiative, the St. Vincent de Paul, Knights of Columbanus and Cursillo.
A great supporter of Fine Gael, Eddie was also prominent in the INTO and Pioneer Association.
Predeceased by his wife, Grainne, the late Mr. McGee is survived by two sons, Anton and Gearoid; daughters, Barbara and Niamh; Sister Agnes Twoomey, a large circle of relatives and friends.
