Well done Siobhan

Huge well done to Siobhan Coyle from Ballyhiernan who was on the line for the All Ireland Senior Ladies final in Croke Park on Sunday, between Dublin and Galway.

Siobhan has been involved in refereeing for nine years now and has taken many big games over the past couple of years. A club person of note, she is part of our ladies team and has coached many Gaels underage teams in the past while also serving as Ladies Board Secretary for several years.

Well done on this fantastic achievement, Siobhan!

Naomh Columba prevail in Championship encounter

Intermediate Championship

Naomh Columba 2:12

Gaeil Fhánada 1:07

A scoring spree in the opening period of the second half was the catalyst for the men from the southwest as they overcame a three point half time deficit to power into the ascendancy in the second period to secure victory over Aidan Mc Ateer’s charges in the Round 2 Championship encounter.

Páirc na nGael in Glen was the setting, and not a breath of wind in the air as Gaeil Fhánada took to the field against Naomh Columba in the Group C Second Round game on Sunday. The hosts, plying their trade in Division 2 had secured victory over Burt in Round 1, while the Gaels went into the fixture on the back of a defeat against Naomh Colmcille.

The opening exchanges were tepid, with the hosts struggling to find their scoring boots for long periods. Eoghan Carr opened the Gaels account from a placed ball, but the busy and effective Ryan Gillespie levelled things in the sixth minute for Naomh Columba. Gaeil Fhánada defended well in the first have, putting pressure on the the ball and forcing the Glen men to take shots from outside the scoring zone. Jimmy Coyle made a surging run forward on the quarter hour mark to pop over a fine point to push our lads ahead again. Another spate of missed opportunities from both sides followed before Jimmy again found himself on the scoresheet. A rifled shot from 14 yards found the top corner of the net on 25 minutes to really lift the Gaels crowd. We had the opportunity to build on this straightaway, but couldn’t capitalise in a poor kick out. Aaron Doherty converted from a free for the hosts before Bernard Mc Gettigan kicked another fine score in reply. Doherty finished of the first half scoring, converting a free from inside the D, after what seemed like a harsh free kick. Naomh Columba 0:03 Gaeil Fhánada 1:03

The hosts really upped their game after the break, powered into the lead with several scores on the trot. Two points each from Doherty and Gillespie edged Naomh Columba ahead by the sixth minute before the games pivotal moment arrived. Ronan O’ Hare found the net for the Glen men eight minutes in, despite the best efforts of Paddy Heraghty on the goal line. Further points from Doherty and Lanty Molloy, before a second goal from Gillespie stretched their lead before Eoghan Carr replied for the Gaels. Gillespie, O’ Hare and Doherty again found the target for the hosts as the final Gaels scores arrived from Mark Mc Ateer and two from the boot of Eoghan Carr.

There were plenty of positives to take from the game, especially the opening period when the Gaels brought huge intensity to proceedings. The greater experience, physicality and scoring prowess of the hosts eventually came to bear in the second period as they ran out deserving winners. Bernard Mc Gettigan battled well, while Eoghan Carr, Jimmy Coyle and Fergus Friel has some good moments throughout.

Focus turns to next weekend now, as we make the trip to Burt on Saturday evening. This is a massive game for the lads, and we’d appreciate a big Gaels support in Hibernian Park on Saturday.

Victory for u16 Girls in semi-final

Gaeil Fhánada 9:06

Moville 3:05

The u16 Girls had a great win against Moville in the league semi-final on Tuesday evening at Páirc Uí Shiadhail, Portsalon.

Conditions were challenging, particularly at the beginning of the game when the rain began to pour, but this didn't deter either side.

Gaeil Fhánada started strong and wasted no time getting scores on the board. The girls worked very well together, defending as a unit and going forward in numbers, moving the ball quickly up the field when given the chance. Moville also got some great scores and certainly looked dangerous on the attack, but Fanad had built a comfortable lead for themselves early in the game and never looked back. Well done to both teams on a good game in difficult conditions.

The Gaeil Fhánada contingent will be happy with the performance and will look forward to playing in the final in a few weeks’ time. Maith sibh uilig!

U13’s Boys remain in contention for place in the knockout stages

The lads had a busy week last week, playing on both Monday and Friday evenings. First up on Monday, they faced off against Glenfin in Portsalon. A high scoring, action packed first half was followed by a cagier second period. The lads were ahead on the scoreboard from start to finish however and recorded a good win in a competitive fixture.

It was a trip to county headquarters on Friday evening, as Mac Cumhaills provided the opposition. Again, it was a competitive outing but it was the hosts who prevailed when the final whistle was blown.

Parish League

The Parish League continues for u6’s, u8’s, and u10’s each Sunday morning at 11am.

This is open to people who will still be u17 in January 1st 2020.

Celebrating 50 Years of Scór

The Donegal Scór Committee are hosting a concert to celebrate 50 years of the Scór competition in An Grianán Theatre on September 29th. It will showcase various acts who have won county, provincial and All Ireland Scór competitions from the county. Tickets are priced at €10 and can be purchased by contacting An Grianán Theatre.

Missing Flags

Two Kerry flags that were flying in Ballymichael before the All Ireland finals have gone missing (possibly blown away?).

The flags were of great sentimental value and if anyone has seen them it would be great if they were returned or given to any of the McGinleys (Attys). Thanks!

***Anthony Blaney Memorial Game***

A big thank you to everyone for helping out with the Anthony Blaney Memorial Game on Friday evening last. We were treated to a great evening of action despite some heavy showers.

The Gaeil Fhánada lads won the cup for the first time with a very good victory over a young Milford team. Well done to Jamie Mc Ateer who was chosen as Man of the Match from the Gaeil Fhánada ranks while Finn Coll picked up the Man of the Match award for CLG Bhaile na nGallóglach.

Thanks to Brendan Callaghan who was referee for the evening. It was great to see the way he communicated with both sets of players throughout the evening. We would also like to thank Michael Mc Groarty who was MC during the presentation.

Míle buíochas fosta to the parents who all brought loads of food and especially to the ladies who made the teas and looked after everything.

Finally, the biggest thanks to both sets of players and management teams who ensured the game was played in a great spirit and in the proper way.

€640 was raised in the donation bucket for St. Luke’s Hospital. Go raibh míle maith agaibh go léir!!!

***County semi-final for u16 Girls***

Gaeil Fhánada v Moville

Páirc Uí Shiadhail, Portsalon

Tuesday 10th @ 6:45pm

The U16 girls face Moville in a home semi final fixture Tuesday evening in Páirc Uí Shiadhail, Portsalon. The girls have had a good run through the competition so far, losing only once, to Dungloe. This will be the second meeting of the teams this year and with both teams eyes firmly fixed on a place in the final, it is expected to be a hotly contested game. As this is a home fixture, it would be great to see a big Fanad support out to cheer on the girls and spur them on to reach the final. So if you're around tomorrow evening, why not make your way to Portsalon for the 6:45pm throw in.

Best of luck to everyone involved. Ádh mór ar an fhoireann agus ar an bhainistíocht amárach!

****U10s Parish League****

The U10s showed that they weren't going to be outclassed by their younger club mates and each of the three games gave them the ability to express themselves on the field.

The boys and girls at this age group were working hard at their separate leagues since April, so it was great to have them playing on the same field as we near the end of the season.

It promises to be an entertaining parish league with none of the three teams running away with it. Cork, Kerry and Donegal were the teams on display and they all showed that any of them could be champions in 4 weeks time.

Thanks to Martin for reffing the games and the team managers Sean, Colin and Marty.

Cork 1 win and 1 loss

Kerry 1 win and 1 loss

Donegal 1 win and 1 loss

A big thanks to all the parents who brought the children and cheered them on as this would not have been such a success without them. Some players were missing this week but there are 4 more to go, every Sunday morning at 11, so plenty football left to play.

****U6s & 8s Parish League***

The Parish league got up and running on a fine Sunday morning in Pairc Ui Shiadhail with boys and girls from 5-10 years old showcasing their skills.

There were three teams in the U6/U8 league and after disputing the team names given by the out of touch adults, the children settled on Kerry, Mayo and Galway. Each team played each other once and provided great entertainment for the large crowd in attendance.

There were some fine performances from all three teams with a huge improvement in passing, fielding, scoring, blocking and general team play. It was great to see all the children getting stuck in and not one somersault or floss was spotted in the hour and a half there.

Thanks very much to Aoife Gibbons for doing a great job reffing the games and the team managers Tommy, Danny and Eoghan.

Kerry 1 draw and 1 loss

Mayo 1 win and 1 loss

Galway 1 win and 1 draw

****U11 Boys****

It was the turn of our U11 boys to travel to Termon for a blitz last Friday night where they played two Termon teams and two teams from St. Michael's. The boys who travelled got valuable playing experience and performed very well against tough opposition. Well done to the boys and thanks to Termon GAA for hosting the blitz.

The team on the night was: Cormac Dunleavy,  Eoghan Dunleavy, Darragh Shiels, Harry Blaney, Conor Callaghan, Iosaf Mc Ateer, Dan Martin, Christian Gibbons, Cillian Gilmore, Oisin Lynch, Jack Dunleavy:

***Well done Méabh***

Gaeil Fhánada’s Méabh Mc Ateer played for the county U13 girls team at the weekend in the Mid-Ulster Arena in Cookstown. The girls played 3 matches against Tyrone, Derry and Down.

Méabh played well in each match and had an enjoyable day in Cookstown. Well done Méabh!!!

***Senior Ladies***

Carndonagh 2-6

Gaeil Fhánada 2-5

The senior ladies travelled to Convoy last Friday to play Carndonagh under lights in the Intermediate championship competition. Conditions were challenging, the wet evening not making things easy for either side. It was a very tight game from the word go, with the teams going in all square at half time.

Carndonagh came out in the second half and really got going, punishing Fanad's mistakes and putting the pressure on. There was a stage where things could've went either way as the game neared it's conclusion but Carndonagh had done enough and they held on to win the game by a point. Credit to both sides for a fair and sporting encounter. Fanad had their chances and will be disappointed with the result but Carndonagh left Convoy as deserving victors. We would also like to wish the Carndonagh player who sustained an injury during the match, a speedy recovery.

The ladies will now turn their attentions to their next game against Aodh Ruadh, Ballyshannon this Monday evening.

Team:

Clare Friel,

Maríosa Friel, Niamh Mc Devitt, Áisling Howe, Maggie Friel, Michelle Mc Devitt (0-1),

Hannah Shiels (1-0), Orla Mc Gonigle,

Miriam Murphy (0-2), Maireád Coll (0-1), Caoimhe Walsh (1-0), Aoife Mc Devitt, Eibhlín Shiels (0-1)

Gráinne Friel for Aisling Howe,

Kate Sweeney for Michelle Mc Devitt.

*** U13 boys kick off campaign with a win ***

Gaeil Fhánada 6-11

Letterkenny Gaels 3-6

Gaeil Fhánada U13 boys got their campaign off to the perfect start with a useful win against a dogged Letterkenny Gaels side. The game was played in awful conditions with a biting breeze favoring those playing towards the changing room goals while the torrential rain meant conditions were tough for both teams.

Letterkenny Gaels did have plenty chances in the first half, having three goal efforts narrowly miss the target. JP Gallagher was steady in goals while Caolan McElwaine made some big interceptions at full back. Eoghan Logue had a good outing too.

Daibhead Lynch and Declan Brougham hit goals in the first half after good moves, while a long range effort from James McAteer found the net to give Fanad a strong foothold. Jamie McAteer, Cormac Shovelin and Shane Carr saw plenty ball in the first half while the midfield of Darragh Doherty and Brougham had the upper hand against two strong opponents.

Fanad hit more goals early in the first half, with Lynch getting four in total over the hour while Brougham hit his second. Our forward line never stopped showing with Ciaran 'Baker' McElwaine and Aaron McLaughlin busy throughout. James McAteer pulled the strings in the second half alongside Cormac Sweeney. Our six subs all got good game time with Mark Hunter, Gavin McAteer, Jonny McAteer, Niall Toland, Adam Ward and Cormac Dunleavy acquitting themselves well.

Next up is a home fixture against Glenfin on Monday 9th September, time TBC.

***Naomh Colmcille take victory in Portsalon***

Gaeil Fhánada 1:05

Naomh Colmcille 2:10

For the first thirty seven minutes or so, there was nothing between the teams in Páirc Uí Shiadhail but two goals and a point in the space of three minutes turned the game in the favour of Naomh Colmcille, and from that point they never looked back to secure two valuable points in group C.

The visitors were sharpest out of the blocks, Keenan Diver finding the target. Mark Mc Ateer responded for Gaeil Fhánada before two points from Willie Gillespie and Daniel Clarke put Naomh Conaill into the ascendancy. The lively Shaun Kerr fired over for the Gaels before Michael Sweeney found the net after a booming ball found him on the edge of the square. Bernard Mc Gettigan from play and further efforts from Gillespie and Clarke for Naom Colmcille left Gaeil Fhánada one point to the good after a closely contested opening period. Gaeil Fhánada 1:03 Naomh Colmcille 0:05.

Brian Mc Veigh was introduced at half time for Gaeil Fhánada and was the first to get his name on the scoresheet after the break. Both teams missed opportunities before what was ultimately the deciding period of game arrived. Clarke fired a point in the eighth minute of the second half when he had a half chance for a goal. He wasn’t to be denied a minute later however, as he struck low into the net beyond Eoin Mc Gonigle. A minute later, the ball was in the net again, courtesy of PJ Mc Brearty which left 5 between the teams. Clarke struck again for another Naomh Colmcille point twelve minutes into the second period. A high looping ball into the Gaels full forward line again found Sweeney, but his connection hit the top of the crossbar and bounced over when he was certainly had goal on his mind.  The Gaeil Fhánada lads battled manfully to the end, but it wasn’t to be their evening. The Newtown based outfit tagged on three further scores from Mc Brearty, William Lynch and Matthew Crossan to seal a deserved victory.
