Football

A bitterly disappointing result for Aodh Ruadh on Sunday, the club's promotion hopes taking a massive blow following a 2-12 to 2-9 defeat at the hands of Buncrana. The homesters were well on top throughout, racing into a 1-3 to 0-2 lead before turning around with a 1-6 to 0-5 advantage at half-time. Aodh Ruadh were improved in the second half, but the Ernesiders second goal came too late to unduly trouble the Scarvey men as they ran out three point victors. Aodh Ruadh's scorers were Philip Patton (1-5, 3f), Diarmuid McInerney (1-1), Shane McGrath (0-1), Paddy Gillespie (0-1) and Michael McKenna (0-1). Aodh Ruadh will be bidding to bounce back on Sunday 18th August Killybegs are the guests in Father Tierney Park for what will be a massive clash in the chase for promotion. Throw in will be at 3pm.

 

The reserves enjoyed better luck in Inishowen, coming out on top of a 4-17 to 2-8 scoreline against Buncrana. Aodh Ruadh lead by two points at half-time before pushing on after the break. The sides played 13-a-side with Raymie Granaghan and Peter McKenna up front with combined age of 104 - We'll let you figure out how that was split. McKenna finished with two points, while JJ Cassidy top scored with 2-1 and Anthony 'Waddle' Coughlin helped himself to 1-1. The reserves are due to travel to Dungloe on Tuesday evening for a 7pm throw-in.

 

Aodh Ruadh minors suffered a 3-16 to 1-7 defeat at the hands of Naomh Conaill in their opening match in the championship group stages. Mark McGlynn was excellent for the Ernesiders throughout while Senan Rooney worked hard. It was good to see the younger members of the panel, like Kyle Murray, Ryan Keenaghan and Aaron Neilan responding really well to the challenge. Next up for the minors is the visit of Termon to Father Tierney Park this Wednesday at 7.30pm. Team and management are putting in a lot of work so it would be good to see a big Ballyshannon support up there for the lads in this vital home game.

 

The championship misery last week continued with the under 14s losing out in their away tie against Glenswilly, 4-16 to 4-3 the final score in favour of the homesters. Ballyshannon were perhaps a bit guilty of going for goal too early, but the lads will learn from the experience. Among the best for Aodh Ruadh on a testing night was Tommy Winters who made a number of good runs from full back, with Eoghan Kelly doing a great job at number six. Robbie Murphy proved a big danger up front for the Ernesiders. Eoin Doogan came on as a sub and was very brave in getting in to net a great goal from a rebound.  The team host Malin this Friday in the Park at 7.30pm.

 

The under 13s had a challenge against Sligo outfit Calry / Saint Joseph's on Monday evening with the Ballyshannon boys earning a well-merited victory. Jack McCadden had a great game in goals with good protection from James Ward who was a rock in defence. Further out the pitch Rian McCauley put in a great shift in midfield while Cian McDonald and Darragh O'Mahoney were excellent in the half forward line. Score of the match came from Ben Daly who belted home a cracker of a goal after a great ball from Jack McCadden. There will be no under 13 training this week with the under 14s out in championship action.

 

The under 10s travelled to Ardara last Friday where our senior team played in a good competitive encounter which saw the spoils shared on a final scoreline of 20 points apiece. The junior team showed some great football ability at times with a display of good team work against a strong Ardara team. This Tuesday sees the team back on the road again with Four Masters the opposition in Donegal, throw-in at 5.45pm.

 

Under 8 training continues as normal on Friday evening from 6pm to 7pm. Our next game will be posted on the parents group as soon as the fixture is confirmed.

 

Ladies

Our senior ladies made the long trip to Annagry on Friday evening. There was a great turn out by the players, but after an exciting game the Ernesiders fell short as the hosts prevailed on a scoreline of 3-14 to 1-12. Thanks to all those who drove and to Paul Gillespie and Sylvester Maguire for their help on the day. The ladies next game is in the championship this Sunday against Carndonagh at 11pm in Father Tierney Park. All support would be most welcome.

 

Training for senior, minor and under 16 ladies continues this week on Tuesday and Thursday from 7.30pm to 8.30pm in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh. 

 

The under 16s continued their winning run in the league with a good victory on the road against Gaoth Dobhair. The stiffness from the journey told as the girls were slow to start. However when they hit their stride the Ernesiders quickly pulled away. Tia McFarland top scored with 2-6 in a player of the match performance, being run close by Ciara Gillespie who bagged 2-4. Chantelle Timoney is quickly becoming a key member of the team and struck for 1-1, crowning a display where she showed great hunger for the ball. Meanwhile, also on the mark were while Aoibhínn McGarrigle who chalked up three points, Orla Keon with two points, and Niamh Hughes, Emer O'Brien and Sarah Jane Keon who registered a point apiece. Shauna O'Mahoney was very unlucky not to hit the net with a couple of chances. It was another fine performance from defensive rocks Eilish Gallagher and Caitlin McGarrigle. In the second half Caoimhe Hughes O’Brien and Demi McFarland played superb stuff. Many thanks to Gaoth Dobhair for the sporting manner they played the match and for the fine refreshments afterwards.

 

Under 13 training continues on Tuesdays and Fridays from 5.45pm to 7pm. The girls have challenge game away to Ardara next Tuesday, 13th August. We would love to see more under 12s coming up to join us at training with the under 13 league due to start before end of the month.

 

Last Wednesday saw the conclusion of the under 12 season with a match against the under 11 boys in Father Tierney Park. Great craic had by all. There was food upstairs in the Aras afterwards and presentations were made to the second skills test winners. Third in the 2007 group were Ellie Brennan and Lauren Foy, second was Andrea Moore, and the winner was Jessica O'Mahoney with 118 points. Joint second in the 2008 grade were Niamh Duffy and Nessa Warren. Winner and the overall winner of the second skills test was Rebecca Downey with 119 points. 13 players did the two tests. The best average score over the two tests was delivered by Niamh Duffy with an average of 108.5 points, just ahead of Andrea Moore. The biggest improvement was made by Jessica O'Mahoney, just ahead of Katie McCaffrey and Maura O'Sullivan. Thanks to Louise Larkin, Gabby McGloin, Aidan Begley, Ken Neilan and Daniel McGullion who helped out over the course of the year, and to the brave souls who stepped up to ref games for us. Thanks to the parents / guardians for all their help with travel, food after games, and help behind the hatch in the Aras. Good luck to the players and hopefully a good number will join the under 13 panel for their season which commences shortly.

 

Congratulations Dairín Sweeny and Fódhla Sheerin who have been selected for the Donegal under 13 Development Squad. They will take part in an Ulster LGFA Blitz on 7th September.

 

The annual Aodh Ruadh Ladies Duck race will now take place this Saturday at 11pm. All cards should be returned to Patricia Hill, Sabrina Brosnan or the relevant team manager as soon as possible.

 

Hurling

The senior hurlers take on MacCumhaill's in the Junior Championship semi-final this Saturday at 7pm. Venue to be confirmed and will be posted on the Aodh Ruadh CLG Facebook page. We'd love to see a big Ballyshannon crowd there wherever it is to get behind the team.

 

The under 16s had a busy week first up on Thursday they made the long trip to Carndonagh and were comprehensive winners against the home side.

 

Then on Saturday they travelled to Owenbeg to take part in a tournament organised by Ulster GAA the lads won their games against Erne Gaels, Carrickmore and Dungannon to set up a final meeting with Derry's Ballinascreen. The lads hurled out of their skins to win by two points, a great achievement for this talented squad. They travel to Dungloe this Thursday to take on Dungloe / Gaoth Dobhair in the league.

 

Well done to Aaron Cullen, Aaron Neilan and Danny Breen who played on the Ulster under 15 squad which defeated the Dublin under 15s in Abbotstown last Tuesday.

 

The under 12s took on table toppers MacCumhaill's in Father Tierney Park last Thursday. It was a ding dong battle between two evenly matched teams. At the full time whistle it was the Ballybofey lads who came out on top by the bare minimum, 2-9 to 3-5. The lads are at home again this week against Dungloe / Gaoth Dobhair.

 

Underage hurling training continues on Sunday for all teams at 12 noon.

Abbey Centre Bingo

Last week's €400 jackpot was won by Marie Gallagher of Ballyshannon. There was one winner of the stand-up game taking the €135 prize. Winners of the €100 houses included Kevin O’Connor, Avril O'Brien, Josie Lynch and Meave Conway, with Helen Coughlin, Deirdre Clarke and Agnes Hastings among the €70 house winners.
