Away day victory in Dunkineely

Gaeil Fhánada 1-09

Naomh Ultan 1-08

Fanad will be delighted after getting two points in what is always tough away fixture. Naomh Ultan will be disappointed to leave the game empty handed as they had opportunities to steal it near the end.

Gaeil Fhánada played against the wind in the first half and worked very hard and created some great chances.

The lads scored 1-8 in the first half with Mark McAteer getting the goal after a great team move. HT Gaeil Fhánada 1:08 Naomh Ultan 0:04.

Fanad had the wind at their backs in the second half but didn’t use it to their advantage and only managed to score one point in the whole half.

Naomh Ultan started the half brightly and then mid-way through the half were awarded a penalty which was scored and it was back to a two point game.

With 5 minutes to go Naomh Ultan reduced the gap to a point but they couldn't get the equaliser, coming close when a late free kick hit the post.

It was a good team performance in the first half from the young Fanad side but still plenty to work on during the week. All in all, a great two points for the lads.

U14 Girls

Gaeil Fhánada 3:06

Mac Cumhaills 2:05

Gaeil Fhánada were first to attack with Aideen Friel finding her range in the second minute. Mac Cumhaills responded with a point of their own and were unlucky not to add a goal, but Lisa Gallagher in the Fanad goal pulled off a great save. The Gaels capitalised on that and went on to fire home two goals in the next five minutes. Iseult Ní Mhathúna with the first, after a driving from deep through the Mac Cumhaills defence. The second came from corner forward Olivia Friel. Megan Mc Loughlin who was causing problems inside made a nuisance of herself under a high ball. The ball finally broke to Olivia Friel who fired high into the net. Megan Mc Loughlin increased the Gaels’s lead in the 15th minute with a point from an acute angle which put seven between the teams. That gap didn’t reflect the difference between the teams, but Mac Cumhaills hit a purple patch in the closing moments of the half. They fired five scores, two goals and three points in that time to go into a two point lead. Gaeil Fhánada found themselves hemmed in and struggled to win possession which gave the hosts the initiative. Aideen Friel did pop up with a very important score just before the break. HT Seán Mac Cumhaill 2.04 Gaeil Fhánada 2:03

Fanad were dominant in the opening exchanges of the second half but spurned some chances. They did get a pivotal score in the ninth minute. Méabh Mc Ateer did well and released Megan Mc Loughlin. Megan beat her marker and slipped the ball into the net at the near post. Iseult Ní Mhathúna scored her first point to increase the lead and added a second a few minutes later. Like the first half, Mac Cumhaills hit a purple patch, but weren’t able to make it count on the scoreboard. They added one point but were thwarted by Caitlin Heraghty and Leah Mc Loughlin in particular. Mia Mc Garvey battled well throughout and made some telling interceptions during this period. Despite the prolonged period of pressure, the Mac Cumhaills goal didn’t come and Aideen Friel finished off the scoring to give the Gaels a four point win.
