Minor boys finish 2018 on a high
Gaeil Fhánada 0:13
Gleann Fhinne 1:08
As the men from Glenfin equalised as the clock struck 60 minutes, all the momentum was with them. Gaeil Fhánada saw a five point lead disappear, but found reserves of energy from somewhere to outscore their opponents by three points to one in the six minutes of injury time to earn a two point victory.
The game was played in decent conditions at the Burn Road in Termon, although underfoot conditions were heavy. Gaeil Fhánada were first on the scoresheet, Bernard Mc Gettigan on target in the second minute with a free. Glenfin replied with one of their own two minutes later before a fine Mark Mc Ateer effort put Gaeil Fhánada back into the lead. Glenfin then benefited from from a mistake in the Gaels backline. A high ball in deceived Eoin Mc Gonigle in the Gaels goal and ended up in the back of the net. The lads rallied and responded with the next few scores, Darren Mc Elwaine with a fine point from play before Bernard Mc Gettigan was upended, allowing Mark Mc Ateer to tap over a point. Bernard Mc Gettigan put the Gaels a point ahead, converting a free in the seventeenth minute. Gaeil Fhánada were the dominant team during this period, but couldn’t add to their tally. At the other end, Eoghan Mc Grenaghan rose highest to claim a high ball in front of his own goal where cleared a moment of danger. There were several cards brandished in the first half, but Gaeil Fhánada suffered a blow in the 25th minute when Mark Mc Ateer was sent to the line for an off the ball incident. The lads defended well for the remainder of the half, but the men from An Ghaeltacht Láir got an equalising score just before the break! Gaeil Fhánada 0:05 Gleann Fhinne 1:02.
Fanad produced a blistering start to the second period to move into a commanding position. Eoghan Mc Grenaghan was fouled in the opening minute which allowed Bernard to slot over his third point. Darren Mc Elwaine landed another fine score in the third minute before three points in three minutes from the 38th to the 40th minutes put Gaeil Fhánada in a strong position. Brandon Mc Clafferty with a classy point from a difficult angle and two further Mc Gettigan strikes, one from play and one from a free opened up a five point gap. Gaeil Fhánada would go twenty minutes without a score however, and Glenfin worked their way right back into the game. Four quick fire points had the minimum between the teams by the forty-seventh minute, Gaeil Fhánada struggling to cope with Glenfin’s powerful running through the centre. Fanad stood tall however, and defended with purpose and vigour. Matthew Gallagher was immense in the final quarter, sweeping up a lot of possession in front of his goal. Glenfin will look back with disappointment that they didn’t find the back of the net in this period, Jonny Gallagher saved one on the line and blocked another goal bound effort. James Sweeney made a vital interception when Glenfin had numbers over, while Eoin Mc Gonigle and Sweeney combined again to clear the danger on another occasion. Both sides hit poor wides during this time, but the equalising score did come as the clock hit 60 minutes, the impressive Ross Marley firing over the bar. Fanad looked dead on their feet, but Mc Gettigan rallied the troops and moved the ball up the field. A free was eventually awarded, and he showed great nerve to fire the ball over the bar. John Friel gleefully accepted an opportunity from the resulting kick out to put two between the sides a minute and a half into injury time. Glenfin, true to form, rose again and fired over the next point from midfielder Kyle O’ Meara with three minutes of overtime played. Both teams gained and lost possession in the final moments before Fergus Friel fed namesake John who fired over the bar. Glenfin attacked again, but Gaeil Fhánada weren’t going to allow their line to be breached and were two points to the good when referee Pat Barrett blew the full time whistle.
Huge credit to both teams for their respective performances today. Underfoot conditions weren’t perfect, and both teams were out on their feet at the end. Great praise to the lads for the appetite shown to get the victory. Bernard Mc Gettigan and Matthew Gallagher were immense, but everyone could hold their heads up high at the end.
That’s brings the playing season to an end, and an unprecedented third piece of silverware for the lads this year. Huge credit to Aidan Mc Ateer and the management team of Hughie Shiels, Bernard Mc Gettigan and John Mc Conigley for their commitment to this group. They have been at the helm of this team for over ten years and have developed a great group of players who never know when they are beaten. Victory today follows victory in the Northern Regional Board final over Letterkenny Gaels last month, while Kilcar were defeated in the Division 2 Championship final in September.
