Minor boys qualify for Northern final

Gaeil Fhánada 3:12
St Eunans 1:07

The minor boys were back in league action on Sunday where they recorded a fine victory over St. Eunan’s B in Glenswilly.

The lads struggled in the first half against a very strong breeze but with some super defending by Johnny Gallagher, James Sweeney and Michael Sweeney they managed to only concede six points in the opening period. Fergus Friel and Bernard Mc Gettigan were full of running in midfield and the Fanad lads got their reward for their hard work with a superbly taken goal by Mark Mc Ateer with Darren Mc Elwaine sublime in the build up. This coupled with some steady frees from Bernard Mc Gettigan kept them in the game. HT: St. Eunan's 0:06 Gaeil Fhánada 1:03.

The second half started with the Letterkenny men maintaining possession for a long period but Mathew Gallagher and Brandon Mc Clafferty engineered a turn over and fed out to Liam Mc Grenaghan who passed the ball 50 meters into Mark, who again tidily tucked the ball under the onrushing keeper. At this stage the game settled and Fanad hit four unanswered points. Although Eunan’s did manufacture a superb goal themselves, the lads answered straight away, another precise kick out from Eoin Mc Gonigle found Joshua Mc Ateer who transferred the ball into Mark and again he found the net. A real feature of the game at this stage was the Fanad subs, Peter Carr and Eoghan Shiels in particular causing problems for Eunans and indeed both players got on the score sheet. Shaun Kerr and John Friel were key man for Fanad, setting up attack after attack all day. Next up in the Northern Final is either Glenfin or Letterkenny Gaels.

Team: Eoin Mc Gonigle, James Sweeney, Johnny Gallagher, Michael Sweeney, Darren Mc Elwaine, Mathew Gallagher, Liam Mc Grenaghan, Fergus Friel, Bernard Mc Gettigan (0:03), Brandon Mc Clafferty, Mark Mc Ateer (3:06), Eoghan Mc Grenahan, Shaun Kerr, John Friel, Joshua Mc Ateer. Subs: Kane Mc Laughlin, Peter Carr (0:01), Ciarán Coyle, Eoghan Shiels (0:01), James Howe, Liam Sweeney.

Well done to our U13 boys who showed great character in the second half to defeat a very strong and physical Red Hughs side on a scoreline of 2-21 to 1-14 on Saturday in Portsalon.  This win qualifies them for the Northern Final where they will play Glenfin.  Further details will be released on Facebook once they are confirmed.

On the day, every single player showed a pure desire to recover from a poor first half.  Brian Gallagher’s kicking was composed and he pulled off a terrific save in the second half when the game was in the melting pot.  Sean Carr and Eoghan Logue were tenacious throughout and swept up any dirty ball played their way.  Jamie McAteer and Ben Orsi on the wings put in huge shifts while Caolan McElwaine was his usual busy self, cleaning up a feast of breaking ball.  In midfield, Ciaran Sweeney got to grips with Oisin Duffy in the second half and stifled the Red Hughs threat while his partner Callum McAteer looked assured and scored a fine solo goal when Fanad needed a boost.  In the forward line, Charlie McAteer got on a lot of ball,  Cormac Sweeney was busy and Aaron McLaughlin gave his marker a torrid time despite Aaron being under the weather with a chest infection.  Inside, Daragh O’Doherty continues to flourish while James McAteer scored an exhibition of points in the second half.  Subs Ciaran McElwaine, Caolan Kerr (who hit a lovely point), Shane Carr, Daibhead Lynch and Cian Din Friel all contributed and kept the Fanad train rolling!

Victory for minor girls in Malin
Gaeil Fhánada 4:14

Málainn 2:04

It was an early start for our minor girls this morning as they made their way around the Swilly to Connolly Park to take on the Malin outfit.

Fanad weren’t at full strength for the game but brought a panel of seventeen with them.

Michelle Mc Devitt was first on the scoresheet in the first minute. The Gaels were wasteful in the opening moments however, not dispatching any of their next three opportunities. Tori Gallagher did well to set up an Eibhlín Shiels point to double the Gaels lead. Lauren hit the first goal of the game in the sixth minute before adding a point a minute later. Fanad were well on top and added two further points from Michelle Mc Devitt and Eibhlín Shiels. Two big scores came the way of the Fanad girls in as many minutes in the twelfth and thirteenth minutes. Both Michelle Mc Devitt and Lauren Carr struck goal to open up a considerable gap. It seem to spur the Malin girls into action however, as they began to get a foothold in the game. They missed a couple of opportunities before striking their first point. Kate Sweeney and Maria Doherty struck a point apiece to reply for the Gaels before Malin struck for goal in the nineteenth minute. They added two further points before Siobhan Sweeney hit the final point of the first half to give the Gaels a strong half time lead.

Gaeil Fhánada 3:08 Málainn 1:03.

The beginning of the second period saw some poor shot selections from the Gaels and they were punished by a second Malin goal five minutes into the half. Fanad replied in the ninth minute with a fine point from Iseult Ní Mhathúna, before Michaela Shiels also struck a point for the Gaels. That seemed to knock Malin back and the Gaels got into their stride. Points from Gráinne Sweeney, Lauren Carr and two from Michelle Mc Devitt along with a Maria Doherty goal finished out the scoring. Malin replied with one further point.

It was another good team performance with many of the younger girls showing well.

Míle buíochas to the Malin club for providing refreshments after the game, they were very much appreciated.

Milford prove too strong for Fanad ladies
Gaeil Fhánada 2:05
Milford 3:11

A depleted Gaeil Fhánada side made the short trip to Milford this morning to play out their penultimate league game of the Div 2 season.

Fanad had 13 players available to them, eight of whom made the trip to Malin yesterday for the minor match.
Michelle Mc Devitt, on the back of recent good performances started at midfield while Maria Dougherty deputised in nets and made two great saves over the course of the game. Muireann Ní Mhathúna, Niamh Mc Devitt, Eibhlín Shiels, Tori Gallagher, Clare Friel and Maria Doherty from the minor team also started today.

Milford had the breeze at their back in the opening period and were first on the scoresheet with an early point. Niamh Mc Devitt ventured forward from her full back position and found a way through the Milford rearguard to fire over a fine individual score. Milford took the lead again before Caoimhe Walsh replied for the Gaels. Fanad defended very well for the majority of the first half but were caught up the field for a Milford goal. They intercepted the ball and broke at pace with the move ending with the ball in Maria Dougherty’s net. They tagged on two points before Caoimhe Walsh interrupted with her second point. Fanad tired in the final moments of the half while Milford got into their shooting stride and added two more points.
HT: Gaeil Fhánada 0:03 Milford 1:07.

The second half had the worst possible beginning as Milford hit a goal, and the added a point soon after. Fanad got a bit of a lifeline with a Hannah Shiels goal which sailed high into the net. The home team responded with three further points before Hannah was on target again, this time scoring a point. Milford introduced some fresh legs which gave them a boost but Fanad defended vigorously and were rewarded with a Michelle Doherty goal after she drove up the field and unleashed a shot. Fanad pushed up and were almost rewarded with a few high balls dropping into the square but the Milford rearguard did enough. Another Hannah Shiels point cut the deficit to six before Milford finished off the game with a late goal from substitute Danielle Friel.

The nine point defeat didn’t do justice to the Fanad effort but Milford were deserved winners on the day.
For Fanad, Michelle Mc Devitt put in a mighty shift in the middle of the field while Hannah Shiels was also in good form despite picking up an ankle injury during the game. Michelle Doherty and Niamh Mc Devitt put in good shifts while Tori Gallagher emptied the tank and battled well up until the final whistle. All in all it was a good performance from a young team. Best for Milford was Niamh Carr, whose strong running from midfield provided a constant threat to the Fanad rearguard.

We would also like to offer our congratulations to Marty Barrett and the Milford team on winning the Division 2 title this year.
Fanad will complete their season next weekend with an away fixture in Killybegs.
