Senior Men

No game this weekend for our seniors and reserves.  Next game provisionally scheduled for Tuesday 24th July against Red Hughs.

Best of luck
Best wishes to club stalwart Brendan Callaghan who marries the lovely Maria Coll on Wednesday, 11th July.  Benny was a regular fixture in our senior team during our successful period in the noughties while he can still be found hobbling along for the reserve side this year.

Lost

One of our club members lost a Garmins runners watch similar to the one shown below on the White Shore beach close to Eelburn car park after 5pm today, Monday. If anyone has found the watch can you please contact us and we can return it to the owner.

Cul Camp reminder

Please check out our Facebook page for more information on how to book online with the chance to have your entry fee paid for by the club.

U16 boys defeated in Shield final

U16 were defeated in their Shield final by Killybegs. Fanad were hit by two early goals but settled into the game and reduced the deficit to 4 points at half time. We took control early in the second half and with some lovely scores took the lead.

Unfortunately we tired in the hot conditions and Killybegs finished strongly to take the victory. The boys put in a great effort and despite the defeat they are a talented group of players who hopefully will go on to play minor and senior football for the club.

Keep up the excellent efforts.

Minor boys record easy win over Cloughaneely

The minor team recorded a convincing victory over a depleted Cloch Cheann Fhaola side in a high scoring encounter at Páirc Uí Shiadhail on Wednesday evening. Fanad laid the foundation for the victory in the first twenty minutes when they hit the net three times, twice from Shaun Kerr and Bernard Mc Gettigan. To their credit, the visitors fought back from a heavy deficit to get to within 3 points of the Gaels midway through the second half. Gaeil Fhánada finished the stronger to pull away from their opponents in the final stages with John Friel, Joshua Mc Ateer, Brandon Mc Clafferty and Darren Mc Elwaine all finding the back of the net.

Shaun Kerr was top scorer on the evening with 2.2 while Ciarán Coyle also slotted over some nice points. All the forwards got in on the scoring during the second half before Ciarán Mc Devitt rounded off the scoring with the final point of the evening! The visitors also hit plenty scores with Seán Geaney impressive throughout! The sides will meet again in Falcarragh in a couple of weeks in the Championship.

Gaeil Fhánada panel on the evening: Eoin Mc Gonigle, Shaun Sweeney, James Sweeney, Brandon Mc Clafferty, Matthew Gallagher, Darren Mc Elwaine, Fergus Friel, Johnny Gallagher, Bernard Mc Gettigan, Shaun Kerr, Ciarán Coyle, John Friel, Eoghan Mc Grenaghan, Michael Sweeney, Eoghan Shiels, Ciarán Mc Devitt, Liam Mc Grenaghan, Liam Sweeney, James Howe, Michael O Connor, Joshua Mc Ateer.

Division 3 Seniors result

Gaeil Fhánada 1-16

Burt 3-7

For the second week running, a strong first half showing was the platform for another good win for Gaeil Fhánada. They hit 1-11 in the first half and snuffed out numerous Burt attacks as they really clicked into gear. They will be disappointed with their second half showing and shooting where Burt through Enda McDermott, Stephen Gillespie and Ciaran Dowds really took the fight to the Fanad defence. Fanad will also be annoyed at the concession of 3 goals but will be pleased with the win.

Fanad entered the game without captain Jimmy Coyle while manager Aidan McAteer was absent as he was on holidays. Burt were missing some fire power in the form of Conor Harkin, Shaun McHugh and Christopher McDermott.

Fanad started at a high pace and got a point within 15 seconds as Michael Sweeney burst through and his fierce drive went over for a point. Scores came thick and fast as the impressive Ephrim McFadden swung over before Enda McDermott fired over a beauty for Burt as he was afforded too much space. Seami Nanny boomed over from 45 yards before Burt won and covered a penalty, their corner back the architect with Calvin Gallagher dispatching past Brendan Friel. Seami Nanny from a free and brother Mark Friel replied to leave the score 1-1 to 0-5 before McHugh levelled the scores for Burt. The searing heat led to a water break as Fanad then took complete control. Paddy Heraghty rattled home a goal after strong approach play from Sweeney but Gallagher replied for Burt. Fanad then hit 6 of the next 7 points in a fine display of shooting. Fergal Friel and Odhran Shiels made some fine interceptions which led to scores. In that period, Brian McVeigh hit three lovely points while McFadden and Seami Nanny also got a point apiece while Burt could only muster one point in response through McDermott. Oisin Shiels cut in from the wing to fizz his attempted goal shot over to leave Fanad ahead by 7 points. Oisin McFadden was having a fine half and his battle with Shaun McHugh was a good, fair battle where both players really went toe to toe.

Half time:

Gaeil Fhánada 1-11

Burt 1-4

The heat was proving difficult for the players but credit to both sides who battled hard throughout. Fanad started the half strongest but were guilty of some poor shooting. Heraghty missed a goal chance while Seami Nanny and Oisin McFadden missed scorable chances. Burt replied ruthlessly hitting 1-1 via a fine McHugh point and a goal from Gillespie when he waltzed through to receive a one-two before rounding Friel to slot home. More poor shooting was eventually met with an Ephrim McFadden score. Burt again replied with a Gallagher free to leave three points between the sides. Burt's short kickouts were causing Fanad a lot of bother and the high ball in to McDermott almost yielded another goal as he dragged his shot wide. McVeigh and Mark Friel tapped over from play as they cut through the thin Burt rearguard before Burt again struck for goal to leave two points between the sides. This time Dowds got on the end of a long ball to prod home as the clock hit 50 minutes. Fergus Friel and Odhran Shiels were guilty of some poor wides before Paddy Heraghty cut in to fist over a fine score which would settle Fanad nerves. Sweeney went on another mazy run and took the sensible option to fist over to leave 4 points between the sides as the clock moved into injury time. Burt huffed and puffed but Fanad dealt well with their efforts and the best they could muster was a Gallagher free from close range. Referee Mickey Mulhern played another couple of minutes as the game fizzled out and Burt couldn't muster a final attack which would give them the goal they needed.

All in all, Fanad will be happy with the first half performance but disappointed with their second half decision making where they seemed complacent with their first half lead. Paddy Heraghty was in good form while the inside line of Seami Nanny and Ephrim McFadden were very impressive. Oisin McFadden was also excellent when called upon and worked hard throughout. Brian McVeigh with four points was also a thorn in Burt's side over the hour. Fanad's defence will be annoyed at the space afforded to the Burt forwards at times as the game went from one end of the field to the other at crucial spells of the tie. Stand in manager Benny Callaghan can pleased with the result (so he can) but knows there are areas of improvement to work upon.

Fanad have a two week break (subject to change) before they take on Red Hughs at home on Tuesday 24th July in what is now billed as a huge game and will have a say in who's at the top end of the table at the end of the season.
